Search and Replace-Degree Symbol (2000)

How do I perform a search and replace for a degree symbol (i. e., a small zero-looking symbol)?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff

You can copy and paste the degree symbol into the search and replace dialog box. Alternatively you can use Alt+0176 (hold down the Alt key then type 0176 on the number pad) to type the degree symbol into the search and replace dialog.

The same way you search/replace any other character. The keyboard shortcut for the degree symbol is Shift+Alt+Ctrl+; (semi-colon), but you can also insert it into the document using Insert | Symbol..., then copy and paste it into the Search and Replace dialog.

Hans and Tony,
I tried copying and pasting the degree sign, but the search dialogue box doesn't recognize any right clicks on my mouse0i. e., I can't insert what I just copied into the box. Any suggestions? I will attempt your other alternatives...

You can use Ctrl+V to paste the contents of the clipboard in the Search and Replace dialog. Typing Alt+0176 or Shift+Ctrl+Alt+; work there too.

Hans and Tony-same result when I tried the other shortcuts. For some reason, the dialogue box will not recognize them.

Are you sure that the focus is on either the 'Find what' or 'Replace with' box when you do this? If the focus is on one of the other controls in the dialog (such as a command button or check box), you won't be able to enter anything.

I would try restarting your PC first. If it still doesn't work then, you could try the steps in Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post>.

Hi Hans:
I wonder if Shift+Ctrl+Alt+; is something new in 2002. It doesn't work in my Word 2000. Instead, Ctrl+Shift+2,space (Ctrl+@,space) works to insert it.

Try this in the Find What box:

^u0176

You may need to uncheck the Wildcards box

If you use the More button to expand the Find and Replace dialog, you'll find the Wildcards checkbox and other useful things.

Phil,

That is quite possible. I have never used Word 2000, and I can't remember what, if any, was the keyboard shortcut in Word 97.
