Manual Windows Update (XP Pro SP2)

After installing the SP2 update, when I try to go to Windows Update via 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Windows Update, I get the following message:

"Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting........"

BITS is on manual and the other two services have been disabled (per my Black Viper config) as they have been for the last three or four years and have been able to update without issue.

So now we are being strongarmed by MicroSoft and am being REQUIRED to leave these unnecessary services running in order to update manually??!

Is there another way?? [i](no linux or mac jokes here) [i]

First, you should never disable the Event Log service. Event logs can contain information critical to figuring out what is happening. BTW, there is not any configuration that I see at Black Viper's Windows XP Home and Professional Service Pack 2 Service Configurations that recommends turning off the Event Log. If you are going to use the 'Power User' or 'Bare bones' settings you have to figure out how to compensate for what you are disabling. You could start the services before trying WU then disable after you are finished.

Remember that SP2 includes version 5 of Windows Update, so a lot of things have changed. That said any settings you had be for SP2 my be the problem.

I would think about ALL those TWEAKS that were made befor SP2 and you just may find that they will NOT be so useful under SP2.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I suppose I can live with the Event Log on automatic....but does that imply there is no other way to manually download than be forced to turn Automatic Updates service to automatic???

I'm confused at your use of Automatic and Manual.

"Automatic Updates" in Control Panel has four settings, paraphrased by me as

Download and Install
Download, but DON'T Install until I say so
Tell me downloads are available, but do nothing else
Turn off Automatic Updates[/list]And note that the final option has a link to the WIndows Update Website where you can ask it to search for updates and download them manually.

Obviously the prerequisite to be able to do this is to enable the services that are needed, as has already been said. If something doesn't work after you have disabled a service, then by definition it is a necessary service!

Re: Manual Windows Update (XP Pro SP2)

Not sure about your confusion other than perhaps 'necessary vs. 'compulsory'...

Previous to SP2:

1) The services management console (services.msc) has a listing for 'Automatic Updates'
2) This service running in the background was not required and the preference was to have it disabled
3) The link to the WIndows Update Website and download manually as had been done for years was able to be performed w/o fail

Post SP2:

1) The services management console (services.msc) has a listing for 'Automatic Updates'
2) Set this service to 'Manual' or 'Disable'
3) The link to the WIndows Update Website to download manually cannot be performed and will be greeted w/ previously posted error message

The point is that now there will be functions rendered useless without compulsory compliance where it did not exist before and the question was a simple 'is there another way?'

Because a service is required for a 'feature' to run does not, by definition, make it necessary.

No, you could have the service set to manual. It would start when you checked for updates. Then after you checked you could stop the service. You could also to search the MS download site. Or, if all you are interested in is security patches you could check the Microsoft Security Bulletin Search. IMO, you're better off just running the service and not worrying about it.

Re: Manual Windows Update (XP Pro SP2)

Unfortunately, sir, setting it to 'Manual' does not permit a manual download from Windows Update, even with BITS and Event Logging on either 'Manual'
or 'Automatic', only if all are on 'Automatic' will it not display the error message and proceed to allow an update initiated manually.

You are right, I will have to learn to live with it and not worry about it. It is just frustrating when MS keeps doing stuff like this when it was fine before.

Thanks and Cheers!

If you don't want BIT and AU running all the time set them to manual. Then when you are ready to check for updates manually start the services. Check, d/l, & install updates. When completed stop the services. Leave Event Logging on automatic and running all the time.
