    Vanishing windows! (WinXP, SP2)

Recently I've noticed that certain windows in IE will open very briefly and close again; two in particular I've noticed are shockwave movies from one particular site (which is no real problem) - and the control panel for the email mailbox of my easyspace (domain name providers) accounts, which very definitely is! I can sometimes get round this by rightclicking and choosing 'open in new window', but not with these two.

I've got the Google pop-up blocker, POW! (a manually setup pop-up blocker that catches the odd ones google misses), norton anti-virus, zonealarm firewall, ad-aware and the spyware blocker Woody recommended to go with it (can't remember its name). None of them can find anything wrong. In trying to work out what's causing this - it seems like a popup blocker to me, yes?! - I've switched them all off one by one, including the popup blocker installed by SP2, and even uninstalled SP2, all to no avail.

Has anyone else come across this, and hopefully had more success in tracking down what's causing it than I have, please?!

Also, how do you turn that <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> bar off, that keeps blocking content for you, whether you like it or not?! I've looked it up in the help, and followed its instructions, plus I've got absolutely everything in the activex etc listing switched to enable (which leaves the protection dangerously low!) but I can't get the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> thing to leave me alone! It even blocks content on web pages on my own hard drive that I'm in the process of creating and merely previewing to see what they look like!!!

I'm all for protection etc, but for heaven's sake they should at least give us the option to turn it off, temporarily or otherwise, if we want to!!

    Pardon a <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> question (from someone with a largely similar configuration), but which " <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> bar" are you talking about?

    Which " <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> bar off" are you asking about?
As you stated that you have several pop up blockers running which one is the one that is giving you the problem?

I would NEVER run more than one utility (of the same type) at the same time. They way fight each other.

The one that pops up just under the toolbars and says "active content on this page may be harmful to your computer and has been blocked. Click here to unblock it." It only comes with WinXP SP2 as far as I know.

    Re: Vanishing windows! (WinXP, SP2)

Not really - the google popup blocker does 95% of the work, but there are occasionally odd windows which it doesn't stop - the POW! program allows you to say "if a window comes up with this in the title, block it" and you can add the window title to the list. Before the google version I used the POW! one exclusively (over time you built up a long enough list, using wildcards, that most nasty windows are blocked, in the way you would a blacklist in email); now I only use it for those google lets through, and it has maybe 10 or so on its list.

Then WinXP SP2 came up with its own one, which I have now switched off entirely. What I can't work out is how to switch off the 'blocked content' bar that appears below the toolbars and says it has blocked active content on this page and to click here if you want to unblock it! Windows Help says you can only switch off its function for each type of content, but although I've done my best (as I said above) I can't get it to leave me alone!

However, I don't think it's that bar that's causing the windows to vanish - blocking content wouldn't cause a window to suicide, would it?

On my systems this went away when I turned off the MS pop-up blocker. Since it appears that you still it it on, check out the the settings listed under the pop-up blocker in the menu. If it s not greyed out, you have NOT turned off the MS blocker.

It is switched off. The only available option is "Turn on Popup Blocker" or words to that effect (it's at home and I'm not).

    Re: Vanishing windows! (WinXP, SP2)

Just as a side point - as I said I uninstalled SP2 at one point in my efforts to track down what was doing it (killing my windows, that is), and that didn't work. I assume that means it's not SP2's popup blocker that's doing it. I also tried switching off the google one and closing pow, all at the same time, and it still kept doing it.

It's also interesting that you say that the content blocking information bar stopped appearing as soon as you switched off the popup blocker - it certainly didn't for me! I wonder if I have to go through all the different zones and check the settings for each one ...

If this continues - is there some sort of tracker that can keep a log of everything that happens on the machine, so I could go to it next time and see what it was that ran to close the window? Preferably freeware, but I'd be willing to pay something to get this sorted if necessary, I'm beginning to find it is preventing me from using my machine and paid-for services!

Thanks for your help so far!

Turn on the MS blocker and see what the settings are. If set to High change to medium or low and then turn it off.
    Let us know what happens.

    Re: Vanishing windows! (WinXP, SP2)

As you surmised, pop-up blockers may close IE windows after they have already opened. IE probably is not the culprit, as it could prevent them from opening in the first place. I'd proceed from the least integrated ones to the most integrated ones, turning them off in that order. You may have to stop and restart the various programs to make the setting take effect. (I'd be most suspicious of Norton and ZoneAlarm, which as far as I know do not have any direct hooks into the browser.)

I have not had a chance to work with the SP2 version of IE6, so I don't know how you would turn off its security-alarm bar, or whatever you want to call it. I suggest duct tape. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> But seriously, please return your security settings to normal until a solution is discovered... unlimited ActiveX is a risk not worth taking.

    Re: Vanishing windows! (WinXP, SP2)

I had the same problem - specific websites would start to open and then close. I'd even thought of posting a question here on Woody.

Whilst fiddling around in my Documents & Settings Username folder I found a folder called popup.log which contained a list of the 'failing' websites and a reason for them being blocked.

After a bit more searching I've found that some time ago I installed a copy of TweakXP, which claims to have a pop-up blocker, but all it does is look for particular words in HTML and close down IE when it tries to load them - regardless of whether it has been opened as a pop-up or deliberately.

I'll turn off that feature and rely on Google's blocker instead. You might want to see if you have the same file.

    Re: Vanishing windows! (WinXP, SP2)

Hi 'GFamily', yes, that turned out to be the problem in the end, although it wasn't TweakXP - is that the same as Tweak UI for WinXP, by the way? I don't think it can be, because I couldn't find a popupblocker in the latter, which I've got.

As I mentioned in my original post, I installed Ad-Aware Plus and SpywareGuard on Woody's recommendation, and I eventually found in rooting around that BOTH of these programms had similar lists of words/phrases that they would use to decide to kill any windows containing them!

Since the google blocker works perfectly (it never tries to shut something I've opened and very rarely allows something to open other than what I want) I've switched off the blockers in WinXP, Ad-Aware and SpywareGuard, leaving just google (with a little help on the side from POW! where occasionally necessary).

Congratulations to Google - they seem to be the only ones who have actually allowed for the user to have some say in which windows are opened, unlike the dictators organising the others!

Despite the problems they've caused, by the way, I'd still endorse Woody's recommendations for Ad-Aware and Spywareguard - as long as they stick to the jobs they're there to do (and do very well) and leave popup blocking (which they do very badly) to those who are better at that!

Edited to add - and Jefferson, you'll be relieved to know that I've put the security back to sensible levels; I only turned them down so low because I was trying to find what was interfering and that was a possibility!
