A Quick 3

    1) You have 7 trees to plant. They need to be arranged in 6 rows with 3 trees in each row. How do you do it?

    2) Roger hung a mirror on the wall in his house.

To make sure it was perfectly straight he measured exactly 40 centimetres from each of two points along the left edge of the mirror to the adjoining wall. But when his wife Sarah walked in and looked at the job she said,

    2. It all depends what you mean by Parallel. Could it be that they are both right

    2) Sarah and Roger's house is one that has an internal fish tank that forms part of a wall (like that romeo and juliet film from a few years ago). Sarah is looking thru the fish tank at the mirror and is seeing the right side distorted.

or 2) Sarah wears really think glasses that distort images more than 5 meters away thus seeing the right side distorted.

or 2) Sarah is actually looking at a reflection of the mirror and is seeing the right side distorted.

or 2) Sarah and Roger's house is one of those modern houses with curves everywhere - putting the mirror up straight to one wall means that it is not straight with another.

or 2) While Roger measured 40cm from two sides of the mirror, he didn't use two horizontal measures thus causing the left side no to be parallel to the wall (his statement about it being parallel to the wall refers to the wall it is hanging on.

or 2) While Roger grew up in the US and doesn't understand sensible measurements like centimeters - he misread this stupid metric tape measure

or 2) Who measures in cm anyway, he should have been measuring in mm.

or 2) I never liked that mirror anyway - take it down

    3) Luckily, the locks used were combination locks and not key locks - Bart was able to undo his lock using the combination (999) and they could all ride home

    Re: A Quick 3

Well done Bowlie-yours is my preferred answer.

Yes indeed they are both right.

It is true , as Roger says, that the adjoining wall, the left edge of the mirror and the right edge of the mirror are all parallel. But Sarah is also right when she the right edge of the mirror is not vertical, but she must have very good eye sight.

Vertical means pointing towards the centre of the Earth.

We just have to be careful when we talk about vertical and parallel in the same sentence

in regards to your answer #3, every time I see the number 999 I get in a sweat, especially after the recent Quick 4

    Re: A Quick 3

she must have very good eye sight
Very good indeed. For a wall of height h, length L (at the floor level), the variation (increase) in L at the top is about hL/(radius of Earth). So for a 10m long wall, 5m high, this amounts to a mammouth 8 x 10^(-6)m. This is well below the limits of resolution of the human eye, so although Sarah is right, I'd say her perception of the situation is all in her imagination.

    Alan

Maybe the answer is no longer 42. Maybe it's now 999.

You may be basing your analysis of what a woman sees, on your own experiences. Women, and in particular Mrs. Bowlie, have eyesight that would put Superman to shame. Right up there with her sense of smell. If she tells me a picture is crooked, I straighten it, no questions asked - and then I take out the rubbish.

    Bowlie

I am a little bit more subtle, I purposely put the mirror up crooked, Mrs Jezza then tells me its crooked, I then straighten it. She feels she has the upper hand on the situation, but I know I have. Oh, for minor victories.

Petty, I know, but it makes me feel so much better
