    IE6 won't connect (SP2)

I am running Windows Xp SP2.

Recently, I could not access the internet any more through IE6.

Windows Media Player, Outlook, Outlook Express & the Windows Update site via Control Panel DO work.

I tried various System Restores, but they all are unable to change anything.

I then tried to reinstall IE6, but it says I have a newer version installed.

I then followed a KB article on changing registry settings to allow me to reinstall, but I still get the same "newer version installed" message.

I have installed another browser (Mozilla Firefox), but this doesn't connect either.

This all leads me to suspect this is really a Windows problem, rather than IE6.

    Can anyone help?

    Many thanks,

    Kevin Duck

The products that do connect use the same connections information as IE. However, it can't hurt to check IE Tools | Internet Options | Conections to make sure that is set correctly for your situation. What error are you getting?

    Dear Joe,

    Thank you for the response.

The connections all look fine & I reset them all to default, without any change.

What happens when I start IE, is the browser opens, the blue bar right at the top changes to the reference of the website I am trying to connect to & the status bar says connecting to ... & starts to count up.

However, it never gets beyond 2 or three of the status bars & eventually I get a program not responding error.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Have you tried re-installing SP-2? Have you added any other software?

    Yes, I reinstalled SP2.

    Dear Joe,

I have not installed any software, although Windows is set up for automatic updates, as is Norton AV.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

What is your homepage set to? Can you change it to 'about:blank:' (without the apostrophes)? Then if IE seems to be OK try a well know site such as www.dell.com or something closer to you that you know responds quickly.

    Re: IE6 won't connect (SP2)

My homepage was set to www.bbc.co.uk. I changed it to www.microsoft.com, but that didn't work either.

I changed the home page to about:blank. I then typed in www.bbc.co.uk in the address bar. The welcome message appeared at the very top of the browser as usual & the status bar at the bottom very slowly started to count up & then the program froze.

Have you run a full virus scan? Have you run Ad-aware and Spybot S&D? You can also run Hijack This - BUT be careful using it. Check out the forums for help with it.
