    Need to make DOC w/list of files in a directory (Windows XP)

    Hello,
    I'm trying to figure out how to list all the files names with extensions that are in a given directory on our network. A screen shot wouldn't work, I need a DOC file that lists them.
    Any knowledge or ideas?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Lounge

    Many Loungers use a free program, Karen's Directory printer for that type of task.

    Thanks much. The trick is that I do not have Administrator rights on my computer here at work (argh!!!). Any other ideas or am I stuck?
    Thanks.

    You could try the command
    <code>
    DIR *.ext > C:Outfile.txt
    </code>
    and then import the text file into word.

    Thanks.

    I just tried that and Access is Denied. Maybe there's no way for me to do it w/o Administrator rights?

    try replacing C:Outfile.txt with a location to which you have write access.

    Thanks. I did try that and it still says Access Denied.

    You could try the MouseTrax File Cataloger. It is a Word template that uses VBA to generate a table in Word showing the contents of a directory.

    Are you sure you have access to the network folder? If you have access to the folder and do not need to do any filtering you can use Outlook. Create a shortcut in the Outlook bar and click on it. You should be able to print the results.

    Re: Need to make DOC w/list of files in a directory (Windows XP)

    Thanks for all the help but still nothing is working. I'm sure I have access to various drives I've tried.
    I want to verify that I'm doing what you're suggesting:
    Open the Command prompt
    (Command prompt window says U:>)
    I want to print a list of files in N:CMPersonal, so I've been typing DIR *.ext > N:CMPersonal

    Am I doing it right?
    Thanks.

    Don't think you're doing it quite right. In your original post you said you want ALL the files, right? When you open the command prompt window to U: you should then next type:

    cd N:cmpersonal Your prompt should then change to N:cmpersonal (case isn't important)
    dir *.* > dirlist.txt You can use any filename instead of dirlist.txt

    See if that helps and let us know.

    Thanks so much for all the help. It still isn't working, but I can live without being able to do it...

    Well, it's obviously your call, but I hate to see you give up on what seems a perfectly reasonable request. Do you mind telling me what happens at each of the two steps in my post - assuming you DO get the command prompt window. When you type the first line, does the prompt change as I indicated? Then, when you type the next line, what happens - any messages, etc? If not, you should check to see if the output file is there. It could have gotten created and you aren't aware of that.

    Sure- I type the cd line and the prompt doesn't change. Weird, eh?

    Re: Need to make DOC w/list of files in a director

    Try typing separate commands such as:
    N: - to switch to the network drive
    cd targetfolder - to change to the directory

    Use whatever is the correct drive letter and folder name for your situation
