    Character Play

Here are 5 interesting sentenses for those who like CRYPTIC puzzles. Hidden in each sentence is a 2 word phrase and a number. One word is formed by consecutive letters, and the other is a cryptic phrase. The number is hidden as a clue, conundrum or random letters in one word that spell a number!

See if you can accurately spot them in each sentence!
    For example:
The polar bear cub escaped its attacker by running across the frozen lake. = Ice Cube - 1 (the o-n-e in frozen)

    TRY THESE:

    Re: Character Play

    This is a first!

I can't recall any puzzle ever not getting a response! Usually they are pounced upon and competed for to get the answers first! Have I made this one toooo difficult? <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Hi Rudi

Yeah, I've got to say I am pretty well stumped on this one <img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17> Any chance of a clue?

    I'd have gone with <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">fire escape - seven</span hide>?

    Rory

That makes sense and a better answer than mine.

This is where I am confused (I thought there were two words we had to find hidden in the sentence!!!)

    Re: Character Play

My understanding is that one is hidden in the words themselves <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">(escape in this case)</span hide> and the other is given as a clue - i.e as 'frozen' is to 'ice' in the example, so <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">'heat' is to 'fire'</span hide> in this one. Not sure about the <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">seven</span hide> though as it's supposed to be in one word?

    Re: Character Play

OK -- Here are some more examples (Or CLUES, to assist in solving the otheres!)

I really hope they will hire me for that tower rescue, as I know that scarp makes able scaling.
Rope or wire are symonims for cable. Car is consecutive letters and 2 is the number, hidden in tower!

    Re: Character Play

Hmm, on that basis, I officially give up trying any more! <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> I have no idea how you get from 'snazzy and snug' to 'coat of paint' and if the cryptic clue for the second word can be made up of any letters in the remaining puzzle, it could take days to even figure out what the clue is supposed to be! <img src=/S/newbrain.gif border=0 alt=newbrain width=21 height=22>

    Re: Character Play

I don't think its too hard to figure out! Besides, "Cryptic" means hidden!

You already have the word RAIN... so the word will be associated with rain! The cryptic clue points in that direction...as in snazzy and snug, meaning cozy,warm... Also you put a COAT of paint on the wall. And if you put the cryptic word with the consecutive word you end up with a 2 word phrase : RAIN COAT. !

    It all adds up in the end. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Character Play

    Yeah, but you know the answers! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
Your second example is still a bit of a stretch to me - snug to coat is not such an obvious jump. I was reacting more to your first example though - if you need to take one letter out of one word, three out of another, one out of a third and then three more out of a fourth word just to get the clue to then start trying to figure out what word you're looking for, it could take forever! Add to that the fact there could be multiple answers (as per my answer to 2: <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">disco</span hide> is in there, then <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">beat</span hide> is a clue to <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">music</span hide>) and I'm searching for the exploding head smilie! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I gave up on this "puzzle" as soon as I read the instructions. Far too <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15> for my limited intellect.
