Laptop Drive Compatibility

    HI,

I'm thinking of buying a CDRW/DVD drive off eBay fro my laptop and I wondered just how compatible they are?

The system I have is a Compaq Evo N610c, what do I have to look out for to try and assess compatibility?

    Thanks

    Re: Laptop Drive Compatibility

You can either get an external - USB connected - device, or you need the Multibay DVD/CDRW that is supported on all the EVO laptops. A quick web search shows a bit more info about this latter product here. The HP part number is D364A, so you could try searching for that too.

An ebay search for "evo dvd multibay" showed a reasonable selection, these should work on any evo laptop.

    Hi John,

So the various drives won't interchange between laptops (an IBM module wont work in my Compaq)?

What about generic manufacturers such as Liteon (who don't, to my knowledge, make a portable but do make drives)?

    Thanks

    I'm afraid they won't John.

You need to either get the correct drive for the physical slot on the laptop - or get an external drive with USB connection (of possibly firewire).

This is one of the disadvantages of laptops, you can't just add generic devices like on a desktop.

    I'm Not Keen ...

... on them either but this is a work one and I would like to be able to write CD's on it and be able to play DVD's (it isn't a bad spec but it was second hand and I somehow ended up with a CD in it) :-(
