Palm Desktop Update

If you use Palm Desktop for your "computer-side" application, you may want to visit Palm and download Version 4.1.4 of the software. I don't know yet if it's a big deal or not but they've added some stuff. This is software that doesn't get updated very often and I stumbled on it yesterday.

Yesterday when I ran a handheld synch (m515) it completed OK, but with a message that my calendar synch skipped a few records because the Palm Desktop had TOO MANY records! I can't believe Palm would have a "number of records" limit built into the Desktop, but I went looking - FAQs, Help, Forums, etc. and still can't find anything. My calendar has entries starting in 2002 going forward, so I guess it could be possible. The funny thing is, the MEMORY on the handheld doesn't even have a dent in it, even with several years of calendar, address book and a few added apps. I figure it may have been a "hiccup" because I went to the Desktop and deleted the one (3-day repeating) entry that had failed and later in the night, after adding some entries I did the synch again with no problems.

    Re: Palm Desktop Update

I need to followup with another post, for editing the last one may not get noticed! I've discovered a problem since I updated my Palm Desktop to 4.1.1 and want to put out a caution while I search for an answer or a reply from Palm. As I mentioned, I did a hotsynch AFTER installing the new Desktop and now there is some malfunctioning on my HANDHELD. Most of the "on-screen" buttons either don't work or work very sporadically. I'm talking not about the hardware buttons on the device itself, but rather the on-screen buttons you tap with the stylus to select items like Done, Cancel, Go To and so on. Since I don't use graffiti, the "abc" and "123" buttons are how I enter text and they are either not working or putting out erroneous characters. In short, use of the stylus has been severely damaged. It's funny that tapping button areas like the Home or Calc or the top of screen selectors such as Edit or Options work just fine. It seems to lie in the on-screen buttons created by each app or the "abc/123" buttons in the graffiti area. Be aware. I suspect it may have something to do with the Hotsynch options but I haven't found it yet. I plan to reset the handheld and re-synch to see if that helps.

    Re: Palm Desktop Update

Sheesh, this is terrible - keep answering my own posts! Well, I "accidently" found (a) (the) solution. While I was poking around, getting ready to do a hard-reset of the handheld, I happened through the original setup (Welcome) process, where it asks you to tap with the stylus on a few " X " spots on the screen. After I did that, everything is working as usual. Who knows whether it was just a fluke of bad timing or a result of downloading the new Desktop software.

Al, so that you can talk to someone else for a change, any comments on V 4.1.4 of Palm Desktop? I sync only with Outlook, but I think parts of Palm Desktop install as part of the conduit.

    Re: Palm Desktop Update

Thanks for chiming in John. I'm afraid I've been so preoccupied that I haven't had much chance to "investigate" what's new in the update. Obviously, the most noticeable are the things you immediately see in the GUI like photos, voice memo and quick install. They'll take a little reading for me to see if they're something I'm even interested in. I did notice in my quick-read that they've changed the names of Datebook to Calendar and Address Book to Contacts. The only reason I even paid attention to that is that NOW in my Hotsynch "custom" list, both the old and new names appear. I need to figure out if one or the other should be removed and if so, how to do it. I thought that might have been the cause of my earlier problem today, but since it's not, I calmed down a little.

    Re: Palm Desktop Update

    Al,

Like John, I moved from the Palm desktop to Outlook. When I did use the Palm desktop, the reference was to Datebook and Address Book. When I installed Pocket Mirror to sync with Outlook the Calendar and Contacts were added... leaving Datebook and Address Book in the list. Then I upgraded to Pocket Mirror's Key Suite to get additional features and the Calendar and Contacts items were changed to KeyContacts and KeyDates. Again, the old Palm desktop items were left in the Custom List.

Perhaps, you unknowing installed Pocket Mirror?

    Re: Palm Desktop Update

Not that I know of, Bob, or at least I can't find any evidence of having done that. I may write again to the Palm folks and ask them about it since they were so good about my previous question. And in that regard, I DID receive an answer from Palm on Saturday and forgot to mention it. I guess I was lucky, 'cause their answer told me to do exactly what I did. Maybe I could get a job in one of their call centers

If your Handheld

    Re: Palm Desktop Update

No, because I sync only with the Palm Desktop, and I saw the same difference when moving from my defunct M505 to my new Tungsten E. It may be the OS version, which is 5.x on the TE and 4.x on the M505, but I haven't installed Pocket Mirror at all, and I saw the same thing. What's more, I had to sync those old categories to get their contents into the new ones!
