compatibility of word XP and 2003 (Office XP)

I have Office XP on my computer. My wife wants to purchase a notebook which will come with Office 2003. I know I can create a document in Word XP that can be worked on in Word 2003. But is the reverse true? Can I create a document in Word 2003 and work on it in XP? Will I need to upgrade XP to 2003?

No need to upgrade, documents created in Word 2003 can be worked on in Word 2002.

Each version of Word adds some new features that won't work (or may look different) when the document is opened in an earlier version of Word. Someone recently started a thread about comments added in Word 2002 or 2003 having additional information inserted into the text in Word 2000.

The new feature in Word 2003 that seems most likely to malfunction in Word 2002, in my view, is the way that protection is applied to very specific parts of a form rather than to entire sections. If you don't plan on sharing protected forms, that shouldn't be an issue. If you do encounter mysterious problems, please post as that may help others in a similar situation.
