    Reset Counter (Front Page 2000)

I published changes to our website (the host supports FP Extensions) and in viewing the site, I find that the counter was reset to -0-. I went back into FP and used the Reset Counter feature to change it back, published the page and it didn't work at all. No matter what I do, each time I go back into the page it correctly increases by "1" but I've lost the first 500 or so hits!

    What to do?

    thanks.

You should be able to set the value of the hit counter to whatever value you want - so if you want to restart it at 500 +. Should be no problem.

Re: Reset Counter (Front Page 2000)

I also found that doing a complete refresh of a web reset the counter to zero and the "set counter to xxx" function failed to work.
The only workround I found is to manually upload the index file which holds the counter number. I haven't had to do it for a while and can't remember the exact details so if you are still stuck, let me know and I'll look into what I did.

Been there, done that! Did not help. Wrote to ISP to see if it's their problem but have not heard back.

    Thanks

I tried uploading index.htm to their ftp site and that didn't work, so I'd appreciate it if you could check to see what you may have done.

    Thanks.

OK - I'm fairly certain this is the way to do it:

Locate in your (local) web folder the sub-folder
    _private

In there you should find a file called
    MyPage.htm.cnt
(where 'MyPage' is the name of the page that the counter is in)

Open with a text editor such as Notepad, and in it you should see a one line file containing something like
    FPCountFile 00000001234

Edit the number - in this example 1234 - to what you want, ensuring you do not add any carriage returns, and save.

Upload this file to the same folder on your web.

    Good luck!

Re: Reset Counter (Front Page 2000)

Very strange! I looked and could not even find a _private folder. I ended up deleting the counter, saving the file. Then I went into Insert /Web Counter/Hit Counter and put it back in. Then saved the file again. THEN I went back and looked and found a _private folder. However, before following the instructions you sent, I decided to publish that page again (after having deleted the counter, and then inserted a new one) and THAT WORKED!

Thanks for the help; I'll be keeping your suggestion with my work notes as I can just bet this will come up again in the future.
