    Doc to HTM (2003)

What recommendations has anybody got for converting Word documents into HTML?

I have students in my classes typing their ESOL assignments into personal Word documents. I am left with about 15 documents for each class which I would like to convert to HTML for publication to the web as efficiently as possible. Ideally I would like to point the programme at a folder full of Word documents and a folder on my local web site and ask it to convert all the documents automatically. Ideally I would be able to ask it to only include style information for the styles actually used in the documents, unlike Word 2003's current behaviour which seems to want to include a lot additional styles as well.

I have found several products advertised with price tags of $200 or more. Is one of these so good that it should be bought no matter what the cost? Or is there another which does the job well at prices more typical of shareware?

Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

    Jim Brook.

    Hi Jim

If you're comfortable with doing a bit of WSH scripting then you can do it all for <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>! The technique described in the article Exporting Word files to HTML is pretty much tailor-made to your requirements.

I'd suggest first testing it on a folder containing copies of some documents. Post back if you have further queries.

Word's built-in "Save for Web" or "Save As" using the HTML format or "Export to HTML" (or... it seems to change with the version of Word, and whether you installed the HTML Filter available from Microsoft's web site a while back) feature will create a good replica of the document, but it will contain additional proprietary taggage that is only needed if you plan to edit the HTML document in Word again. The program "HTML Tidy" could clean up earlier versions of Word-HTML, but I don't know whether it works with Word 2003 files. If you want to try it, there is an open source project that has absorbed and updated the program here: http://tidy.sourceforge.net/. I haven't downloaded or tested it myself, but if you search the Lounge, you can find some more comments on it.
