Inserting linked pictures (Word 2002 (SP3))

My problem concerns a difference in Word's behavior when inserting a linked picture vs. inserting an embedded picture. I've created a number of button facsimilies that reside on a transparent background and (for now) are saved as .PNG files. The object of my exercise is to use linking rather than embedding, while retaining the transparency of the background.

When I insert an image using "Insert > Picture From File" (NOT linked), all is well....the transparent background behaves transparently.

But when I insert the same image as a linked file, the "transparent" background is treated as an opaque background. This occurs when inserting via an INCLUDEPICTURE field with the d flag, or when using the menu-driven commands and selecting the "Link to File" or the "Insert and Link" options from teh Insert drop-down list on the Insert Picture dialog.

Is this a flaw in Word's handling of the "d" parameter in the INCLUDEPICTURE field? Or am I trying to do the impossible.

This is just speculation, but... could it be that "linked" images uses some code from IE (or the IE components of Windows)? I believe that even IE6 (at least as of Windows XP SP1) does not properly support the transparency attribute of PNG files. This is why we still have to use the old GIF files in some cases, despite the advantages of PNG.

The image was created in PhotoShop, saved as a .PNG, and inserted/linked to a Word doc; I don't think there was any web-related aspect to it. But I hadn't considered that the problem may be specific to the .PNG format, and I'll try the same scenario with a .GIF. Thanks for responding.

Same result with the .GIF as with the .PNG
I've attached a screen clip to illustrate, in case it rings a bell for anyone.

Is it possible that what you're seeing is the field shading? Go to Tools / Options / View tab. At the top right, what value is showing under "Field Shading:" -- Change it to "when selected" or "never" and see if the grey goes away.

Thank you SO much. I completely forgot about that flag, and that was it.

You're welcome. I'm glad that was it. It was the picture that did it.
