    Use photo as wallpaper (XP/2000)

What do I need to do to use a photo from my digital camera as wallpaper? Selecting the file from "browse" isn't working (that only works on web pages).

    Thanks!

Sure you can select a photo. I'm not sure what you mean by " that only works on web pages ". Right click on an empty portion of your desktop>Properties>Desktop Tab>and then browse to where your file is stored and select it. Since most photos will be smaller than the desktop, you will probably have to select the "stretch" position.

You might also want to checkout Webshots for a great program that not only has thousands of photos that you can DL and use for wallpaper or screensavers, it will allow you to import your own photos and let you resize them to fit the screen. I've used it for years and it certainly is much nicer to look at your pick of pictures instead of the "blah" ones included with Windows.
    And it's <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>

In addition to John's response, what file type is your photo, wallpaper can be any one of these file types - .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .dib, .png or .htm

There was also a problem with the original release of Windows XP that caused some people to have problems saving images as wallpaper, see Cannot Select a .jpg Image as Your Desktop Background Image.

An alternative way to set the image as a background:
Make sure Windows Explorer is set to show common tasks. In Windows Explorer select "Tools>Folder Options..." and on the General tab make sure "Show common tasks in folders" is selected. You can then browse to the folder containing the image, select the image and in the picture task options on the left select "Set as desktop background"

I'd check the software that came with the camera for wallpaper options. Olympus digitals ship with the Camedia software that allows a picture to be set as a wallpaper image, as is or with some nice effects.

Another software-related option would be the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> program Irfanview (open the image, then select Options | Set as wallpaper).

Copy the photo(s) to your hard drive, Open the desktop properties, select the desktop tab and then Browse to the folder and file that you saved from the camera.

Make sure in the file name window, that the HTML type is NOT selected. You may have this selected and that is all you will see.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

Thanks - this is what I have tried, but when I select the picture, it changes to the background some PCs, but not on others. The PC on which it does not work is running Windows XP SP-1 - do you if that makes a difference?

    Thanks!

If the camera output is a file type that Windows uses for wallpaper (most are) you can simply copy or download the image or images directly into your C:Windows folder and then right click on your desktop and choose Properties>Desktop tab and if the file/s you added are not on the list then choose Browse and then go to your C:Windows folder and select the files. Unfortunately, I believe you will have to do this one by one. As each one is selected it will become your desktop wallpaper. HTH <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
