Links to other files (Word 2000 SR2)

Whenever I open a Word document that contains links to other files (i.e. Excel) I get the message 'This document contains one or more links to other files. Do you want to update this document with the data from the linked files?' I then have to click on the Yes button. As I always want the document updated is there any way to prevent this message and have the file updated automatically on opening?
    Thanks for any help.

In Tools -> Options -> General, there is a check box that says Update automatic links at Open. Does that do what you want?

    Thanks for that:
The box is already checked. If I uncheck the box there is no option to update the links at all. I want the links to update without me having to confirm whether I want them updating every time I open the file - just being lazy I suppose!

OK - it seems that this is a change in the way Word handles fields after a Service Release. I found a Knowledge base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330079/EN-US/ that tells you how to edit a registry key to change this behaviour.

    Hope that helps.

Ian, thanks again. This looks like the answer. It will take me some time to digest this heavy weight stuff before I fiddle with the registry. Don't worry I'll make a back up!

To simplify your task, after making a backup:

Go to Start/Run & type
    regedit
    & <press enter>

On the left side, scroll to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0WordOpt ions

Look for FieldCalcSecurityLevel
    on the right

Right click it & choose Modify

Change the number to 0 (that's a zero) & click OK[/list]Do the same for
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftOffice9. 0WordOptions
    if it exists.
    Cheers,

    Phil

I have the same thing happen in Word 2003, I don't mind but the punters get upset with any additional pop ups that happen.

Do you know if this fix works here as well?
    cheers

    Phil

Tried the registry mod @ HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0WordOp tions but it didn't appear to work.

    Do not have a key @ HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftOffice11 .0WordOptions.

I then realised that it doesn't really matter because we are not using live data. The updates are only used by myself as no one else has rights to change the documents.

    Thanks anyway.
    cheers

The article doesn't refer to Word 2003, but I would guess that it does. I'd back up the registry & try it. Of course, the version number would change from 10 to 12 (I guess). [Correction: 11]
