    Narrow Name Box (Excel 2002)

    Hi

Can any one tell me if it possible to widen the name box just below the toolbars, I have some long names and I would like to be able to read them.

    Thanks in advance

The answer is "no". Your alternatives are setting up a widened text box in the actual workbook - which may be messy - or using Print Preview. If you switch to View|Print Preview and reduce the magnification (best done using a scroll wheel on your mouse), you will see the names of your ranges written across the ranges themselves. This method also has its practical limits, but hope that helps.

    Braddy,

    Well, actually you can, see...

    http://www.vbrad.com/pf.asp?p=Source...el_namebox.htm

I tried it out a couple years back and it worked very well.
However, It blew up one time and I haven't used it since.
I believe that the code has been improved since then.

I wrote this simple one a few weeks ago.
You can use it the same way as the name box, with one addition: preceding a name with the exclamation mark will create a name local to the active sheet.

    Jan,

Was (is) it your intent to leave the command bar installed after closing the workbook?

    Hi Jan Karl

What name did you enter? Works fine for me.

Probably not. The workbook is bashed together rather quickly, so a lot of error handling and application actions are not accounted for I'm afraid.

    Hi Jan Karl

Yeah I tried to define name instead of entering it directly in the name box.

    Many Thanks

Re: Narrow Name Box (Excel 2002)

    Hi Jan Karel,

    You are the name manager!

But I tried your simple name box and had the following problems:
    - it looks like you predefine a name for "top". I didn't do anything to create it yet had it in your name box. But checking Excel, it indicated that this refers to "=Sheet1!#REF!".
    - I think, from my testing, that if I type a name in Excel's name box, I've seen the name come up in your name box - but not reliably. One time, I think I did something (switch sheets?) and came back to Sheet1. Then your name box seems to have been "refreshed" and the names entered in Excel's name box showed up in your name box. Just got it: if I create a new name in your name box, then any names previously entered in Excel's name box now show up in yours.

One other "feature" you didn't mention is that clicking on a name in your name box positions the left most cell associated with the name at the top-left of the screen. I kind of like that.

    Well, I did say I sort of bashed it together. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
It is by no means a "student proof" utility (and I have no plans to make it that way either).

The name called "top" is a remnant from my own testing of the utility and can be removed.
