    'Scan to PDF' software

I have an oldish HP LaserJet 3100 "All-in-One" device whose HP JetSuite software came with ReadIRIS v7 (which processes scanned images, does OCR, etc). This does not have a scan-to-PDF function, just to a proprietary format -- for Scan-to-PDF you need to upgrade to version 9 at only another $130!

My requirements are fairly simple -- scan one or a small number of A4 pages (of text, tables, logos) and convert it/them to a single black&white PDF file. Deskewing (image rotation by a few degrees to make the text lines more horizontal) would be a useful feature, but not essential. The free-er the better.

I haven't found much on the web, since this feature is usually incorporated in much larger scanning/OCR/FAX packages. Scan2PDF at

Why not go for the multi-step process. Scan to whatever format the tool supports, copy and paste as a picture into your favourite word processor, print to PDF using any of a number of freebie packages.

Thanks, Stuart, but I would much prefer a single-step approach! I've had a lot of trouble with full-page graphic images...

PS At this rate I'll have a to buy a new all-in-one box with a flat-bed scanner...

I don't know what your existing app does, but if it can print, isn't it viable to let it do its thing, then print its output to a PDF virtual printer driver, like CutePDF Writer ( <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware) ?

    That's a neat Idea I hadn't thought of - I will investigate!

    Re: 'Scan to PDF' software

I use Alan's method (CutePDF Writer) and it works well. The only problem with this is (sometimes) dirty scans. If the scan resolution is not set high enough, or the scanned page has some imperfections, the scan can't be cleaned up before the PDF file is created. In this case, the only alternative is to scan to an image file, clean it up and then create the PDF.

Just curious here. Isn't it possible, with the scanner software you're using, to "clean up" the scanned image before letting the OCR loose on it? Or is it more involved than that?

    Re: 'Scan to PDF' software

If there is a way Alan, I haven't found it. It's an (XP) version of HP Precision Scan for a ScanJet 5200C and I curse the software every time I use it. Its performance seems to depend on what day of the week it is or whether it's sunny or cloudy and I haven't figured out those parameters yet. In any event, enough <img src=/S/ranton.gif border=0 alt=ranton width=66 height=37> about HP software.
