    Hello all.

Does anyone know the keyboard shortcut for a "Square Root" symbol ??

The square root symbol was part of the old MS-DOS (USA) extended ASCII character set, but it was dropped from the standard Windows ANSI character set. (It was still available in dedicated symbol fonts.)

Recent versions of Windows support Unicode; the square root symbol is available in many Unocode fonts, but there is no keyboard shortcut for it. You can use the Character Map accessory to select and copy the square root symbol, then paste it into an application.

In MS Word 2002 and higher, you can type 221A (the hexadecimal code for the square root), then press Alt+X. This doesn't work in other applications, though.

We have on or belgium keyboard a square root key.
If I use this and ask for the ascii value it give me 178.
So typing ALT 0178, give me the square root symbol but I don't know if it will work on a US/UK configuration.

Sorry, the ALT 0178 give the square symbol and not the square root.

    Hi Dave

    Some alternative nomenclature:

    Xsuperscript1/2
    or
    X^(1/2)
