    Printer resetting

I have an HP LaserJet 5L and am using Word97.All our page settings in Word are for A4 paper. The Laserjet is set up for A4 as well. However, recently the printer setup has been changing back to Letter 8 1/2 x 11 without our knowledge or intervention meaning not everything prints out as it should. We set it to A4 again, then some time later it resets to Letter again. What is causing this resetting and what can be done to stop it?

Do you have your printer properties set for bi-directional support?
This should allow the program to dictate what page size to use. ( among other things )

Go to Start>settings>printer & faxes>under printer tasks and properties, click ports. Down near the bottom should be a box to select bi-directional support.

    Re: Printer resetting

Have followed your path without success. I can click Start/Settings/Printers, then I get a list of all printers installed on my system. Right clicking on LaserJet 5L I then click properties. Under Details there is a button, Port Settings, but it has nothing about bi-directional. I am running Windows 98SE. Does this have any bearing?

Yes, that is for Win XP.
I can't recall exactly what the setting for 98SE were.

Maybe someone else who still has SE on their system can jump in here and point you in the right direction. Meanwhile, I'll try to jog my memory a bit.

    Re: Printer resetting

    Hello,

I don't know if you have looked at the HP site but they have a supprt page for the HP laser Jet 5L starting here.

From rambling around in this site, I also found some information about setting Common PJL Commands for Front Panel Settings and Default Page Formatting and that information can be found here

Another thought occurred to me that just maybe you need to reinstall your print drivers as they can become corrupted sometimes. Don't know if any of this will help but I hope you get your problem solved! Printers are frustrating at times!
