Open dialog box in Word/Excel (2003)

I would like to know if it's possible to customize the Open dialog box in Word/Excel (2003). For example, I would like it to appear with the details format as default instead of the list, and also to be wider, so more columns will be visible.
    Can this be done?

If you select Details view once, Word and Excel should "remember" this, and use Details view next time you open the Open dialog. The same holds for the column widths in Details view, and for the sort order. At least, it works for me that way in Office XP/2002.
