    WMP Radio Stream

    Hi,
I used to be able to listen to Radio streaming using WMP 8.
Upgraded to WMP 10 and when I now attempt to listen, I receive this error message.
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. In the Open URL dialog, try opening the file using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").
My OS is XP Pro. Browser is FF V1PR.
When I click on a link from a web site to listen live, I receive a message that my Browser is not supported and will pass stream to browser which may play successfully. A pop-up window is shown, asking to allow an "external protocol req" which I agree to, WMP opens and gives me the error message above.

Anyone have any ideas on a solution for this problem please?

    Thanks

    Neville

    Re: WMP Radio Stream

Were you using FireFox before you upgraded to WMP 10 ??? If you're getting a "browser not supported" message and then an error from WMP 10 it may be that FireFox and WMP 10 don't work and play well together in this configuration or situation. If you were using FireFox before you upgraded then it's likely a conflict with WMP 10 and FireFox. On the other hand, you may have to use Internet Explorer for this particular purpose. Some sites just plain don't work with FireFox.

    Re: WMP Radio Stream

    Hi

I had been using FF (12 months?) prior to upgrading WMP (1 week). I did previously receive the error message that my browser was not supported, it would then pass the link onto WMP which would play the stream OK.

It's only since my WMP upgrade that I am now getting "protocol not supported" message from WMP.
I am aware that some sites don't work with FF, I just assumed that once WMP had opened, that it had control over the stream.

    Thanks

I'm grabbing at straws here, but is there a plug-in for Fire Fox to stream the radio using WMP 10 ??

    Thanks Doc,

I've had a look but haven't been able to find anything yet.

I'll try posting this on their support site & see if anyone has a solution.

One last thing you might try...... Use Internet Explorer (I know you didn't uninstall it <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>) to stream the radio and see if it changes how WMP 10 handles the stream. If it works with IE then you know that it has to do with the interface between FireFox and WMP 10. I'll try a couple more Google searches for different terms and see what I can turn up.

    Re: WMP Radio Stream

    Thanks again,

The stream also didn't work with IE, as i still received the same error message.

However, I did some hunting around in "Add/Remove programs" in Control Panel and noticed an additional Windows media update that must have been installed when I upgraded, so I uninstalled it, rebooted and I'm now able to listen to my radio streams as I prev did.

Thanks for you help with this.
