    Toolbars won't go away (2000)

Every time I open a certain document 2 or 3 unwanted toolbars pop up. I turn them off with the "X" or with the menu, but they keep coming back every time. I open this doc several times a day, every day.

How can I get rid of these unwanted tool bars?

    Open the document.
    Select Tools | Customize...
Activate the Toolbars tab (if necessary)
Select each of the unwanted toolbars in turn, and click Delete.
    When you're done, click Close.
    Save the document.

If Hans' instructions don't work (for example, you might not be able to delete built-in toolbars), can you describe the toolbars in more detail? For example, is one of them the Reviewing toolbar? Controls toolbox??

You're right, that Customize procedure did not work. I can uncehck their box, but they come back when I reopened the doc. The delete button is gray in the subwindow under Customize.

The 2 are the Control and the Design toolbars.

Open the document & then go to Tools/Templates & Add-ins.../Organizer. Switch to the toolbar tab & delete them from there if they are custom toolbars. You can also press Alt+F11 to open the VBE & press Ctrl+R to open the Project Explorer. Look for modules containing macros like AutoOpen. If you have add-ins loaded in your startup folder, they may be loading the toolbars.

Added: I just re-read your post. The Control & Design toolbars will load if you were in the process of creating controls or userforms. If you have no macros or controls in this document that you wish to keep, why don't you just copy the content to a new document & use that as a replacement. You can simply use Insert/File to insert it into a new document.
    Hope this helps,

I think these two toolbars are built in. I sure didn't create them. There are no Autoopen items in the macros. The only thing that could possibly be involved in the Start menu is the MS Office item - but it has been there for years and ever caused problems before. When I look in the Word menus for addins, none are loaded.

Any other ideas? This is extremely frustrating....

The Control and Design toolbars seem to have a mind of their own.

Periodically, something, I know not what, triggers their appearance.
They usually stay away when I close them.

Some macro/add-in/DLL could be triggering them, or, as monsieur Phil suggests, rebuild the document, or perhaps, you need to only/also rebuild the documents template. See http://www.standards.com/index.html?RebuildingTemplates.
