Home Page grayed out (6.0 SP1)

All of a sudden when I go to Internet Options and try to change my home page, the field is grayed out. Every thing else on there works, I can select Temporary Internet Options and History just fine.

I need a brilliant mind to figure this one out, are there any avilable? Appreciate any and all suggestions, except formatting my hard drive. Been there and done that once too often.

Do you have Spybot Search & Destroy installed? One of it's options is to disable the option to change the home page. If you have Spybot select Tools from the left pane and the IE Tweaks. This page has the option to "Lock IE start page setting against user changes"

For a registry hacks that can lock and unlock the home page setting see this site

If you did not change this setting then it is best to scan your system with the anti-malware software shown in <post#=296439>post 296439</post#>.

Gee, Tony that was fast, I just posted this.

Let me try to explain my problem more clearly
.
My homepage isn't locked or hijacked, it's exactly the one I selected. My problem is that when I try to change to something else that option is grayed out and I cannot make any new selections.

I hope I've been more explicit.

(Edited by tony55 on 07-Nov-04 15:48. Additional link added)
Do your internet options look something like the attachment with certain options unavailable?

I used Spybot to disable these options using the method mentioned in my earlier post. The registry hack link shown in my earlier post can also be used to lock and unlock those settings.

Added:
To download a .reg file that you can use to unlock the home page go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll to line 63, left hand column.

Re: Home Page grayed out (6.0 SP1)

Your attachment looks exacly like mine. Since my last post I removed all .dbx files and restarted the computer. Alas! That was NOT a fix.

I had in the different folders as shown below.

Deleted Item: 29,003 kb
Sent Items 7,371 kb
Inbox 4,233 kb (and this was after I had read and deleted all messages)

Those are just the monstors, the others were very small.

Back to the drawing board, what's next?

The dbx files are for Outlook Express and have nothing to do with your "Homepage".
Where did you get the idea that deleteing them will fix your homepage?

Have you put this in the wrong thread? Should the comments about the dbx files being deleted be added to your <post#=424192>post 424192</post#> in the Outlook Express forum.

Re: Home Page grayed out (6.0 SP1)

I know it has nothing to do with my home page, I was just making an unncecessary comment about what I had done. Sorry guys, I'll try to stick to the point in the future.

In <post#=424196>post 424196</post#> above, Tony gave you two solutions to try. Did you try either of these?

Re: Home Page grayed out (6.0 SP1)

Hi Tony.
Guess what? I have Spyware Blaster which I opened and went to Tools > Misc. Setting. Lo and behold there was a check in Disable the IE Home Page settings area in the Internet Tools Control Panel. How it got checked beats the you know what out of me. Any who, I unchecked it and opened IE and there were my options to change my homepage. So, all is well on the home front as least in this thread it is.

Thanks for all your help. Talk to you again sometimes, and thats a given.

That is one of the problems with most of these TOOLs to protect us. One MUST become very informed about the product(s) they are using and need to tell others about ALL of them when one is having problems with their machine.

Re: Home Page grayed out (6.0 SP1)

There was no need to do either of those things. I posted a message to Tony that the problem had been fixed. In Spyware Blaster there was a check mark in Disable the IE homepage settings area in the Internet Tools control panel. How it became checked is a mystery but I removed the check and my homepage change setting is available.

Thanks for all the help I received from all of you great guys on Woody's.

You said a mouthful that time. I was advised years ago that when in trouble as a last resort, read the manual. Thank the good Lord for you people on the lounge. You've assisted me time and time again, and I really appreciate the help. Sometimes we dummies stumble upon a fix but that's not often enough for this dummy.

Thanks agin Dave.

Gloria, that's exactly the FIRST thing Tony suggested you check in the FIRST paragraph of his FIRST response to you.
