Domain name hosting (Australia)

Although I've set up websites before, this is something I haven't embarked on, and I'm after some advice. I need to register a domain name (long term) like xyz.com, which I know is available. I need about 30MB of webspace for the associated site, together with (at least) one associated e-mail address like info@xyz.com. No fancy e-commerce stuff needed. Site traffic would be pretty low bandwidth I'm guessing. I'd also prefer to have the whole show arranged in Australia.

From what I can gather, there are several Australian companies accredited as registrars by ICANN. Some of these offer various webspace & e-mail hosting options. Others offer various levels of browser/ mail redirection services to nominated websites. Prices appear to vary considerably. Could anyone familiar with such Australia-based service providers offer any advice or recommendations please?

thanks

Given that you're really after a web site, you might have better luck finding a reliable web host first, and then using its domain name registration facilities. If they are unreasonably priced, you could end up with two service providers (site host + DNS provider).

Re: Domain name hosting (Australia)

When my web host experience began several years ago, I first secured my domain name through Network Solutions, not knowing any better. So, they still show up as my registrar. In this time, I've been through about three web hosting companies for one reason or another. I'm currently using HostOnce which I believe to be based in Australia, based on this info in a Whois search for their domain name:

Registrant:
HostOnce.com DNS Profile1b (HOSTONCE-COM-DOM)
HostOnce.com DNS Profile1b
PO Box 8016
Oakleigh East, Vic 3166
Australia
9515 3977

I also think they have "servers" in the U.K. and USA, but I'm not sure about that. They advertise domain name acquisition too, but I've read comments about that, in that the resulting domain name is not quite as user controllable as might be desired. You should check that out carefully before you do it. I've gotten "decent" support from them when necessary, but they ARE rather slow to respond and one has to go through the process of filling out a trouble ticket on their web, then wait for an answer. My web pages are strictly for "fun" so I don't think I generate a lot of traffic at http://www.alhoffman.org/. I do make heavy use of their email and aliasing provisions to create "throw-away" email addresses and their control panel is pretty standard stuff.

Is there a major reason for the ISP to be from "Down Under"?

If not, I use http://www.1and1.com and the price is RIGHT,

Thanks for the input Jefferson, Al, Dave. These are all things to consider and I've now widened my scope accordingly. I will let you know what I come up with in the final analysis.

Re: Domain name hosting (Australia)

After much searching, I have eventually settled on a local, well-established provider, making an offer too hard to refuse:
SmartyHost offers hosting of www.yourname.com with 50MB webspace and 50 e-mail accounts for AU$80/year, plus domain name registration of www.yourname.com for AU$29/year. That's US$85 a year in all, and that was too good to refuse!

Nice price, now remember to post your "Domain" here so we can all learn from your mistakes

Well, it's not for me actually; nor will they be my mistakes . It's something I've just organized for somebody else. But I'll be pleased to post the URL once it's up... if you promise to buy something from the artist who owns the site .
