    MSWord

I am going to bite the bullet and need to learn MSWord.
I need a good tutorial and free downloadable MSWord-type software.
Can anyone help me with this?
My computer only has Wordpad - never did have any Office-type software installed.
Appreciate any and all help on this.
    Thanks.

I'm confused: the authentic MS Word is not going to be free. If you want MSWord-type software that is free, check out OpenOffice.org 1.1, a suite like MS Office. OpenOffice Write (or Writer? I forget) reads and writes the Word DOC format, and supports most important features of the MS product, at least through version 2002 (Word 2003 has some innovations that I don't know about).

    Re: MSWord

Howard...I don't have the money to purchase any software.
Anyway, I did download OpenOffice, but when it came time for the section on Java, it wouldn't let me download/install the SUN Java from the setup.exe for said SUN Java. I only have MSVMachineJava.
I just uninstalled OpenOffice, did the Registry search for all of it's components, etc.
Oh well. Back to the ole drawingboard.
Thanks to all that replied...appreciate it very much.

Have you tried to download the J2SE 5.0 runtime from Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 ?

    Re: MSWord

You are aware of course that the MS version is simply a licensed version of the Sun code (license expires in 2007) and MS is encouraging its customers to move to the Sun version? See this article . In any event, you don't need Java for Open Office to function properly unless you are getting into some of the more advanced features. See here .

    Re: MSWord

I understand that re MS, etc.
Have no idea what XSLT, JDBC, etc. is/are...so I wouldn't know if I needed those or not. This stuff is completely alien to me.

    Re: MSWord

Exactly. So why not give OpenOfffice a try? At least you can experiment and become aquainted with some of the concepts, tools, functions, etc. that are unfamiliar if you are looking for a free alternative to Word. Also, if you Google on "OpenOffice tutorial", there are many sites that can help you along.
Also, the OpenOffice Support Page has lots of information and links.

    Re: MSWord

I don't know whether your computer came with Microsoft Works, but the Works suite historically has included a reasonably up-to-date version of the stand-alone MS Word in it. The interactive features that operate between Word and Outlook, Word and Excel, and so forth, are not in there (or are inoperable), but the basic MS Word is there. Of course, if you built your own computer, this may not apply to you!

Is there somewhere I can find out whether or not I do have MS Works suite? It isn't listed in my Add/Remove Control Panel.

    Re: MSWord

You do realize that WordPad is sort of a Word 6.0 lite, don't you? Depending on what you need to learn about "using Word", it may be all you need.

    Re: MSWord

Charlotte...I only use Wordpad as something to type down phone numbers ...making a list of usernames/passwords for various websites in Favorites...stuff like that....other than that, I don't know anything else about it. I can change the size of the type (or whatever it is called), and that's about all I know about Wordpad.

I'm still trying to find out if I have any OEM Works suite on this computer.

    Re: MSWord

If you have works on you system you should have known by now. It would be listed in the menu and MS Word would also be listed.

It will be listed under the folder "Microsoft Works".

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
