    F1 doesn't bring up task pane (2003)

    One of our users aske me this, and I can't duplicate the problem. She has the same version of Office 2003 Professional.

    At work, when I am in Excel, and I hit the F1 key, the task pane comes up but on the program I just installed at home it doesn't. Instead I get the Excel help window. Is there a way to change that?

    You can remap the keys with something like:

    Application.OnKey {F1}, "OpenTaskPane"

    This will cause the F1 key to run the procedure "opentaskpane". You would have a macro named this to open the taskpane:
    Sub OpenTaskPane()
    'Add your code here
    end sub

    I don't know the code for opening the task pane. It is not available in XL97. You might be able to get it via macro recording

    Thanks for the suggestion, but we are wondering why F1 performs differently on the two machines and what drives it. I was thinking there might be a setting that needs to be changed, but I looked in the Options and can't find one. It's not something we want to insert code for. It's not that big a deal. I'm mostly just curious at this point.

    Are you sure ctrl-F1 is not the keys the user is using to pull up the task pane?

    What happens on the home machine when you use Ctrl-F1? Do you get the Help Pane or a specific Help Window such as the attached? What are your settings under Tools | Options | General | Web Options? Does this behavior difference show in other office Apps? Do you get any error messages such as these in <!mskb=816948>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 816948<!/mskb>? (I'm wondering if it might be an installation option difference.)
