Do I need to 'compact messages'? (OE 6)

Recently I've been getting a popup message from Outlook Express saying "To free up disc space Outlook Express can compact messages...." Then it goes on to tell me it will take a few minutes etc. What is this compacting messages all about? If a message has been "compacted" can I still read it just as before? Why would I want to compact messages? I usually keep very few messages in my OE folders (except sometimes when it gets ahead of me). But this box keeps popping up and I'm not quite sure how to respond to it.
Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom out there.

If it works like Outlook, it will compact out space left where you have deleted messages, not delete graphics or attachments or do anything else radical to save space. But that's my assumption based on how Outlook works, and an Outlook Express user who has used this feature may know better than I.

Take a look here for a little background on this subject. My own take is that it is more like defragging your hard drive than compressing your files. A comperssed file can take forever to open, as it must uncompress before it can open. Compacting your email folders seems to rearrange the files and free space to operate more efficently and free up wasted space. I haven't noticed any significant slowdown in opening my old emails after compacting. To do this manually in OE go to File>Folder>Compact or Compact All Folders.

    Thanks much for the info.
I notice this only happens on the computer that has Windows XP, SP2. The other computer, which has Windows 98 doesn't get these messages even tho it also has Outlook Express 6 like this computer. Maybe it's a Windows XP thing or a SP2 thing, do you suppose?
Anyway, again thanks for your help.
