Cayeen pepper 4 cholesterol!

I know this is not the site to ask for medical advice, and I'm certainly not after medical advice. I would just like to know if anyone else has heard if Cayeen Pepper is good for curbing cholesterol! I know that red wine is said to help...etc, but cayeen pepper?? I'm trying it out and getting a good rap in the mouth with it's fervent flavour.

Again, I'm not asking for advice, and not giving medical advice either. I would just like to now if anyone else heard this and if you tried it...did you get results??? (Before I start breathing fire!!)
Regards,
Rudi

I don't think so, but I haven't gone and searched Medline (e.g., on PubMed).

Generally speaking, antioxidants may help reduce the formation of arterial placques, but you probably can't eat enough cayenne to get an appreciable amount of antioxidants.

One thing that they are using hot peppers for is topical pain relief. I think the brand name is Zostrix or something similar to that. You spread this stuff on aching joints and your brain is tricked into believing that your skin is being burned. Endorphins are released to kill the pain. Eat enough hot salsa and the same thing will happen in your mouth. However, I don't think there is a connection to cholesterol...

Rudi,

I found this info here
CAYENNE PEPPER--

Properties: Alterative, Anthelmintic, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Antiseptic, Antiviral, Astringent, Carminative, Circulatory Tonic, Counterirritant, Diaphoretic, Expectorant, Hemostatic, Rubefacient, Sialagogue, Stimulant, Tonic

Internal Uses: Arthritis, Bleeding, Chills, Colds, Cough, Dysentery, Headache, High Cholesterol, Migraine, Pain, Poor Circulation, Shingles, Sinus Congestion, Worms

Internal Applications: Tincture, Capsules

Cayenne causes the brain to secrete more endorphins. Cayenne is rich in vitamin C. It is considered thermogenic, meaning it can rev up metabolism and aid in weight loss. Cayenne also improves circulation. Cayenne helps to relieve pain, not only due to its endorphin enhancing properties, but also when diluted and used topically it helps to block the transmission of substance P, which transports pain messages to the brain.

Topical Uses: Arthritis, Bruises, Pain, Sore Throat, Sprains, Wounds

Topical Applications: Gargle for sore throat, apply topically to bleeding wounds to stop the blood flow. Lotions and creams may be purchased that contain the active ingredient, capsaicin, which is applied topically to arthritic joints, sprains and bruises.

Putting a bit of Cayenne between your shoes and socks on a cold winters day helps to keep the feet warm.

Energetics: Pungent, Hot, Dry.

Contraindications: Keep away from eyes and mucus membranes. Wash hands after contact with any loose form of cayenne. If you ingest cayenne and it is scorching your mouth, rather than drinking water, use milk or beer -- whichever is closest -- to quell the fire. Avoid large doses when pregnant and nursing. Seeds can be especially hot and in some varieties are best avoided. Large doses may irritate the gastro-intestinal tract and kidneys.

Thanks Mr J and Dr W.

This report is most informing. I see it lists cholesterol too. I'll continue to use it until my next Chol. test. See if its done some good?

If anyone else out there has tried this before....did it help?
Regards,
Rudi

Rudi,

Perhaps if I had spelled Cayenne correctly the first time my search would have produced better results. I got much more from this Google search.

Particular ly interesting were this site and also this one. It seems, at least among the homeopathic medicine proponents, that Cayenne and Capsicum have powerful healing properties, and may in fact lower cholesterol.

Well, my doctorate is not in medicine, and I don't pretend to be an authority on herbs and spices, but I wouldn't rely on cayenne on the basis of that sort of page (nor would I take Altoids to cure migraines, per the discussion on peppermint). I see no harm in spicing up your diet -- visit the Vindaloo Emporium, where they treat people twice a day -- but if it were my money, I wouldn't buy capsules or potions without better evidence.

Thanx for the research Doc. You have helped confirm some things I heard about this spice. I have read the pages and they have given some good insight into the spice.

Glad the information was useful. I'd hate to see someone burn out their intestines if it wasn't going to do them some good.

I'm not a French speaker, and I'm not surprised to see "Google" in the French language- but is "Googled" really the past tense of Google in French?
