Strange User account (Win XP SP 2)

I have just been looking at my Control Panel "Users" section and discovered a User that I knew nothing about. I have one there called

    "ASP.Net Machine A..."

I did not KNOWINGLY create this account. I accept I could easily have done it un-knowingly, but I certainly didn't understand if I did create it.

Is this a necessary Account, or can I delete it?

I have done a search on the forum, and came up with a number of threads to read, the latest being 290341, about a year ago. I've read them all, but not really understood them. The latest prog I've installed is Norton System Works. I don't know if this would have added it.

    Any suggestions welcome thanks.

My suggestion is to Google for "asp.net machine a" (including the double quotes.

There seems to be a lot of information available, some of which free!

    Thanks

I've read several of them now.

It does seem to be harmless, but I'm puzzled as to what prog added it.

    Thanks anyway

The reference http://www.dotnet247.com/247referenc...35/176277.aspx talks about the ".net framework having been installed".

As I remember it, this is one of the "optional Windows updates", and here is the most recent example, its Service Pack 1 (mm/dd/yyyy, of course!).

After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

I don't have this account, as far as I am aware, so this service pack (or the original .net framework 1.1 installation?) may be implicated?

I also find on TechNet an account of a web cast:

Account used for running the ASP.NET worker process (aspnet_wp.exe)

It was created by Microsoft .NET Framework and is necessry for .Net applets.

Don't touch it. If you want uninstall it, uninstall corresponding Microsoft .NET Framework program (from Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs).

You either installed the .NET framework or installed some other software that check for .NET and installs it if it is not already on your PC.
