Firefox lost bookmarks and many preferences (1.0PR now 1.0)

Something strange happened to my computer. I wish I had a more recent backup... At least it didn't lose my Lounge cookie. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Make backups. Lots of backups.

"Something strange happened to my computer"?
    Succinct, but not wildly informative!!

It is probably the result of the intuitive logic built into all operating systems and hardware that since you haven't made a recent backup this therefore must be the perfect time to go wrong... S*ds law, I believe it is called!

Yeah, I was greeted with a blue screen this morning, crash in the ATI graphics driver. After reporting the sad news to Microsoft, Windows launched Firefox pointed at the OCA site with a link to ATI. Soon after I noticed that certain download preferences had changed. And my home page was changed to a start page at Mozilla.org. I figured maybe I had received a silent update, but Help>About still showed 1.0PR. I switched to IE, downloaded the 1.0 release and installed. Some preferences still were not correct (e.g., prompting for cookies had turned off), so I turned that back on. When I went to bookmark the instructions page on that, there were no bookmarks.

Luckily, the open Outlook PSTs survived this ordeal, which are much more critical than three months of updates to my bookmarks, but I just can't understand what whacked the preferences and bookmarks files in the first place. I don't even think I had left the browser open when I left the office last night.
