Error Message (Win XP Home SP2)

How do I get rid of the following error message?

16 bit Windows subsystem
C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Close Ignore

If I choose either Close or Ignore the error message goes away and my system seems to be working fine. That is until I restart and then the error message is back again.

Under what circumstances is the messge appearing:
Immediately when you start up/log on?
When you try and run a specific program?
Has this suddenly started happening?
Is your XP an upgrade installation (over another OS) or a clean install?

That's what is wierd. I get the message right after I enter my log on password and hit Enter. I'm not trying to run any specific program, but my Firewall & Anti-Virus programs are still starting. I even tried uninstalling them and but that made no difference. I think this started after I ran SpyBot or AdAware. I even did a system restore to a point 36 hours earlier, but no luck there either. My SP2 upgrade is on top of the original OEM Win XP Home. It has been running fine for a couple of months since the upgrade.

Did you read the article and try the recovery steps? Have you done a full a/v scan?

Leif & Joe, you guys are really amazing! I think Gates should give you both a raise!

The recovery steps did the trick and yes, I also did a full a/v scan. Thanks again!
