ASK and REF changes formatting (2000-2003)

I have a Template that uses ask fields to prompt for information.
This information is then duplicated at certain points in the document.
This works fine, but the different refs have different font formats.
However, when used although the fonts of the ref fields are correct when
field codes are revealed, the ref fields get the wrong font.
Indeed there seem no pattern to this.

For example The ask field is in Bold 12 point
The first ref is in Blue 10 point bold
The second ref is in Black 8 point standard

Depending on the number of words you put in there are odd results
e.g. With 5 words entered, the first ref came out in 10 point blue (NOT Bold)
The second ref came out in bold (all of it, the first 2 words in Bold the next 3 in 12 point bold)

If you run it again with a different number of words the results can change again.
This has happened on WORD 2000, XP and 2003.

Is there a way round this (without resorting to VBA and bookmarks) or is it another one of those
    Microsoft Features?

    Love an answer

    Thanks
    Andrew

Press Alt+F9 to view field codes. The REF fields will look like { REF Bookmarkname } or { REF Bookmarkname * MERGEFORMAT }. Make them look like this:

    { REF Bookmarkname * CHARFORMAT }

Make sure that the first character of REF is formatted the way you want. Now press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes. Select the REF fields and press F9 to update them. The formatting should now be OK, for the effect of CHARFORMAT is that the formatting of the first letter of the field type is applied to the entire result.
