free backup software

Found a link to this Universal Backup Tool - UBT at Shell Extension City. Looks interesting. When I can find some time I'll look at it more (probably d/l and try it).

I just glanced at the info.

By itself, the following would make me want to steer away from UBT.

"Full backups every time

Well, if it is really that much faster then one of the big reasons for doing an incremental backup is negated. The only other is the size. With todays hard drives and other backup medium the size is a small price if you can easily backup & restore.

Remember that the best things in life are rarely free, especially if they are as complex as backup software.

...I did not bother to check whether one can restore individual files...

Well don't you think you should do so before you "reject" the thing, out-of hand?

No.

The inability to do an incremental backup kills it for me.
Backing up 30GB+ every time is a lot more wasteful of time than backing up only the files that have changed.

Also note that the product is going to be turned into commercial product.
At that time, I may look at it again.

I just downloaded tyhe critter.
All the .zip contains is a .exe, so I ASSuME that one has to install the product to get further info.
I'd never do that.

Ah - "I don't know anything about the software, I'm NOT going to install it to see what it's actual capabilities are, but I'm going to reject it because "it's wasteful of time". Fortunately, most research is usually carried out in a slightly more structured environment.

Re: free backup software

Why should I take a chance and install software I most likely do not want/need?

That's why most products have separate documentation, or other info, so one does not have to install software to find out the general details.

I am also inclined to only install software I am reasonably sure I need. I have always felt that the stability of Windows platforms is directly dependent on the number of products installed and deinstalled.

I don't know anything about this company, other than it seems to do translation services and offers some kind of email/groupware product (all info in Spanish), but spinning off a home-grown utility as freeware is becoming more and more common as a way to attract attention. Perhaps it doesn't qualify as the best, but for many people it may be perfectly fine. I think I'll wait until I see NASA's opinion.

Re: free backup software

Designing and implementing a backup program requires certain expertise not usually found at companies not specializing in certain areas.

I'd be very leery of any "backup" product that ignored the ability to make incremental backups. That's a fundamental issue affecting the design and implementation of a backup program.

Yes, especially those that interact with the file system, and those that deal with backup/restore.
