NAV AutoProtect Slows File Management (XP Pro SP2)

I've read the various threads on this forum that deal with Norton Antivirus hogging resources, etc. On my PC, I have not noticed that, but I have noticed the behavior of the PC is very significantly affected by Norton Antivirus AutoProtect feature. First, it is my understanding that AutoProtect is an important component of the NAV software, so disabling it potentially can have negative consequences........I think.

With AutoProtect ON, anything on this PC that has to do with file management, i.e., finding files, copying / pasting or moviing files slows to a crawl. With AutoProtect OFF, everything speeds up. I guess my question is if others have noticed this, and if so, what can be done about it.

I guess on obvious solution is to get another anitvirus solution, such as the Trend Micro product or the AVG product. I'd be interested in knowing what sort of experiences people have had with these also.

    Thanks a lot for any thoughts. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I run with AutoProtect on all the time and have NEVER noticed any slowdown except when opening an Office file with the Office Plug-In enabled. Even then (and enabling this is really not necessary), the slowdown is minimal. If your system speeds up when AutoProtect is disabled, then I would think that something else on the system is conflicting with Norton and that is what is causing the problem. What that might be, I'm not sure.

I too am running NAV with Auto-protect on. I have seen a slow down on some machines, but they were (are) low end, not much CPU speed, low on memory and smaller hard drives. Some even had their "PageFile" very small, because the operator knows more about the Windows OS than MS does.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks for the reply. Dave. I guess the time has come. On an annual basis I usually try to clean out this PC. Meaning, with full duplicate backups available I reformat the drives and reinstall everything. I was hoping to be able to wait until we actually got a holiday weekend, and maybe I still will do so. But you know how it is: Weird things start happening just because of a year's accumulation of trash.

This PC has a 3.06 GHz with 1 G of RAM and is quite robust. I think it's just getting time for the "house cleaning".

    Thanks again for your reply.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I answered Dave and I think that this indicates the need for my annual reformat and reinstall. It's a pain, but I usually find that at about 1 year the accumulation of junk from everything that goes on starts making strange things happen. I guess that's the case.
