Need for Re-Activation? (XP Pro 5.1.2600/SP2.0)

What happens when I re-format my hard drive and do a clean re-install of XP? Will I need to reactivate? Or will the system automatically detect that my XP is already activated?

According to <!post=this post,107896>this post<!/post> you should be able to do it without a problem, to the SAME hardware. Keep in mind that the post is showing a little age, so I can't attest that it still works since I've not had to do it "yet." By the way, there have been several others who've said that even if you do have to re-activate, it's quite "painless."

It will also depend on who built your machine. My Dell has the activation code hardwired into the motherboard or BIOS. As long as I don't change the hardware setup too much, I can format and reinstall until the cows come home and it will never need to be reactivated. Or so I'm told. I did have to install a new HD about 3 months after I got the system (original HD failed) and that was just a format and install on the new HD.
