    sequential numbering (Word 2003/Win 2000)

    It's bad design I know but I have to use Word to recreate a document originally created in another application, possibly Framemaker.

    The heading structure uses headings 1

    Yes you can do this.

    1. Set up the numbering for Heading 3.
    2. With your cursor in a Heading 3, type a new stylename into the Style name box in the toolbars (This creates a new style with the same attributes as Heading 3)
    3. Create the TOC field so that it uses style names rather than outline levels eg {TOC t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2,Heading 3,3"}
