    Section breaks and blank pages

I am working in Word 97 on a 9 page document. There are 4 pages on portrait, 5 pages on landscape. There are 4 section breaks because of the various sizes of tables. In print preview, I see 11 pages, two pages are blank. When I print, it prints only the 9. I need to convert using adobe to display on our intranet. I get the blank pages. Why??? I am using the next page section breaks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Deborah

Re: Section breaks and blank pages

I've just followed the link to given by JustCallMeAl, it's a dead end. Further, if you search MS for the wrdac97.htm page you find something about a mail merge security patch. Maybe I missed it but it doesn't seem to relate to the original problem of blank pages and section breaks.

On that point all I can offer is that I sometimes get an extra page after a section break in print preview but it always prints out as well. This fix in this case is to ensure the section break is set to New Page and ensure the first paragraph after the the break is not formatted to page break before.

The link was from MS's knowledge base.

The information does speak about mail merge, fooled me the first time. However, it does contain the patch for the problem.

This is a known bug in Word 97. The fix is at:

    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/9798/wrdac97.aspx>http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/9798/wrdac97.aspx</A>

Yes, the patch says it is for Mail Merge, however, this sentence from the page describing what is being fixed states,
<hr>The following fixes are included in this update. All fixes from earlier updates are also included in this update.<hr>
If there is any doubt to the veracity of the patch, do a search for "landscape" on the following web page. You will see that the patch in the above link does deal with the landscape bug.

I edited my original post. Check out the links. You will find that what I posted was not false. Yes, the link was dead, but it was (at one time, according to MS's KnowledgeBase) pointing to the correct solution.

MS recently changed the OfficeUpdate site is now found at:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://office.microsoft.com>http://office.microsoft.com</A>

They have done this in the past and it takes a little time for the links in the KB articles to be updated.

A little background on the Post Service Releases for Word:
There is the Macro Vulnerability patch, Mail Merge Security Update, Leap Year Fix, and ODMA.

These should be cumulative, so if you download the latest patch you should also get the fixes in the previous patches.

The latest is the Macro Vulnerability patch with a release date of May, 2001. I think it is pretty recent so I don't know if it is available.

So the patch before that is the Mail Merge Security Update as JustCallMeAll referred to but now is located:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/wrdac97.aspx>http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/wrdac97.aspx</A>
