no MS bluetooth stack installed (Win xp pro SP2)

To get my phone sync program (Mobiledit!) to work on my notebook I have to remove any third party bluetooth drivers and re-install/activate MS's Bluetooth stack. The advice I have is that if there are no other thirdy party bluetooth drivers, then Win XP SP2 should install its own bluetooth drivers.

However, there is no sign of them. For example, after removing Toshiba's drivers from my Portege 4010 there is no bluetooth icon in the control panel. Nothing shows up in Device manager either.

Any ideas about how I can re-install Microsoft's own bluetooth stack/drivers?

    Thanks

    Richard

WIndows XP is hiding unused, but installed drivers from you. To remove them, boot to Safe Mode. To do so, click Start | Run, type
    msconfig
and hit Enter. On System Configuration Utility window, click BOOT.INI tab and check /SAFEBOOT checkbox. Click OK, close MSCONFIG and reboot your computer.

When in Safe Mode, don't forget to call msconfig and uncheck /SAFEBOOT, otherwise you will boot to Safe Mode each time!
Open Device Manager (Start | Run, type
    devmgmt.msc
and hit Enter) and uninstall drivers.
Reboot to Normal Mode. Windows must detect bluetooth adapter and install drivers. If not, use Add Hardware wizard from Control Panel.

Re: no MS bluetooth stack installed (Win xp pro SP

    Thanks for reponding.

Well, I have gone through your suggestions with mixed results.

I uninstalled the Toshiba Bluetooth stack to get rid of the most obvious third party drivers, then rebooted in Safe mode.

I looked in device manager but could not find any other obvious Toshiba (or indeed any other) bluetooth drivers. The only mention of bluetooth was Toshiba's Bluetooth Personal Area Net Packet Scheduler Miniport (shown under network adapters). Device manager won't allow an uninstall of this anyway as it is "required for boot up".

I then rebooted in normal mode but XP did not detect any bluetooth radios/devices. I ran Add Hardware but, again, no new devices. I drilled down, found, and forced an install of Toshiba's Bluetooth network adapter. This installed using MS drivers (hooray) but then showed up in Device manager with the old yellow ! mark and the dialogue "This device failed to start". I checked properties but nothing useful there except that the driver is the Aug 2004 one from MS.

There is a bluetooth icon in the system tray. If I click on that (or run bthprops.cpl) I get the bluetooth devices options but not surprisingly., when I run add device, it does not find my phone. Same goes for the sync software - it doesn't find the phone either.

So it seems if I am nearly there but any ideas on where to go from here?

    Thanks again

    Richard

Re: no MS bluetooth stack installed (Win xp pro SP

I thought that I would let you know I HAVE CRACKED THIS ONE! It only took about five days of fooling around and tearing my hair out. <g>

It might be worth posting the full solution as I have found others through the internet that have had similar problems with Bluetooth Adapters and even USB dongles on other computers. Then anyone searching here might be able to adapt my efforts.

To recap: the problem was that I needed the Microsoft Bluetooth stack for Win XP SP2 to run my mobile phone sync software as it was not written for specific third party drivers. However, when I uninstalled the Toshiba Bluetooth stack , the MS stack would not reinstall. Following your advice I found and deleted all other third party drivers (Toshiba's and a CF card that I had once used). A re-boot still produced no MS stack. I uninstalled and reinstalled XP SP2 but still no bluetooth stack. Furthermore, XP didn't even find the Toshiba Bluetooth Adapter. I then forced a new hardware install for Toshiba's Bluetooth adapter using the Add Hardware wizard. However, this gave a failed install with the message: "This device failed to start ..." etc. and the dreaded yellow ! in device manager.

I had a look in the registry and found a difference between the numbering of an entry in the Local_Machine USB entries and those to be found in the Bluetooth inf file (bth.inf). The registry entry read:

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSBV id_0930&Pid_0502". (Note the number Pid_0502.)

The relevant entry in the inf file read:

    [TOSHIBA.NT.5.1]
TOSHIBA Bluetooth Adapter = BthUsb, USBVid_0930&Pid_0507

Note the different Pid number. So what I did was add a copy of that line, but substituting the 0502 number, giving ths result:

    [TOSHIBA.NT.5.1]
TOSHIBA Bluetooth Adapter = BthUsb, USBVid_0930&Pid_0507
TOSHIBA Bluetooth Adapter = BthUsb, USBVid_0930&Pid_0502

    I then:

    1. Saved and exited the bth.inf file
    2. Opened device manager and uninstalled the failed Bluetooth installation
    3. Rebooted

And, hey presto, Win XP found the hardware, installed all the relevant MS stack drivers and I was able to connect to my phone immediately!

Thanks for your help and hope this might be of benefit to others sometime

    Regards

    Richard

Don't mention it. I have had enough help in the past for you folks. This is a chance to give a bit back
