Save confirmation AFTER document has been saved

I am in the process of converting several Word 7.0/95 templates to Word 2000 documents, in a Windows NT 4.0 environment. I am doing this by launching the templates using Windows Explorer, going to Tools, Templates and Add-Ins and removing the associated template, using Organizer to transfer any macros, toolbars, AutoText, etc., then resaving the document as a Word 2000 document.

This has worked fine, except I have noticed that, after using Save As to save the new document, then closing Word, I get the dialog box, "Do you want to save the changes you made to <filename>.doc?" Why am I getting this confirmation dialog AFTER the document has been saved?

I don't know why, but I regularly find that Word 2000 does this. I assumed that it must want to save some more information, about the file that previous versions didn't - maybe when last printed or something? (Just guessing, really.)

Do you have any fields in your templates, that are getting updated after saving? This is common when going from one view to print preview after saving the document. The fields recalc. then Word says HEY wanna save the changes.

    Just one possibility.

No, in most cases, our forms are simple text documents (print and fill-out forms). A few (about 20 percent) are "on-line" forms, with form fields and protection; and even fewer have macros, calculations, mail merge fields, etc. The Save dialog occurs EVERY time, regardless of the complexity of the document.

I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't related to the document/template relationship. In other words, when I launched the document from the template, it was associated to <filename>.dot in Word 7.0. When I broke that relationship and saved the document as a <filename>.doc in Word 2000, the document may "temporarily" think of itself as both a "document" and a "template." Therefore, after the document has been saved, it prompts for changes to the template - which, in this case, is the document itself.

    I know, it's a reach, but...I've seen stranger things. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
