Strange and scarey Recycle Bin (XP Pro SP2)

I deleted some files this morning then cleared the Recycle Bin. Later I noticed that the icon on my desktop showed that the recycle bin still had content. I double clicked on the icon. The display showed nothing in the recycle bin, but the option to empty the recycle bin was still there. I clicked on this to see if it would clear the problem but got the attached "confirm file delete" dialogue box. I answered "no" and rebooted. That cleared the problem but left me a little shaken. What if I had automatically answered "yes".

There are many similar stories to be found by Googling - the common answer seems to be a corrupt file. (For example, see this thread at Winguides)

Try running a full ChkDsk and see if that fixes it.

Thanks, Leif. The problem has not popped up since the last reboot. Chkdsk ran OK - no problems. I'll follow up on your suggestions should this happen again.

    Cheers,
