    Firefox optimized (1.0)

Most software, including Firefox, is designed to be run on a wide range of processors. This means that the software does not take advantage of the new features of the latest processors which could enable the software to be more efficient.

Some individuals and groups have built versions of Firefox using compiler options to optimize the code for specific processors. This has created a series of optimized builds that are noticably faster than the official releases.

One such site that includes optimized versions of Firefox 1.0 is Moox. This site also includes optimized versions of Thunderbird.

For discussions on optimized builds see the MozillaZine Third Party/Unofficial Builds forum

*** WARNING *** These are unofficial builds - If you have any doubts about using these builds then stick with the official releases from http://www.mozilla.org

    Re: Firefox optimized (1.0)

Thanks for posting this, Tony. I'm trying out the M2 release of Firefox 1.0, and so far there is a noticeable difference in performance. I suspect that geeks like me are more likely to notice the differences, which are small but numerous. Taken as a whole those differences have made Firefox that much more pleasing to use.

Although I am not yet ready to declare this release my primary browser (too soon to know), it is very promising.

I have been using the en-GB localized M3 release since 14th. I have found it to be very stable and I have made it is my primary browser.

I think the main noticeable performance boost is the speed with which it renders a page.

    Hello Tony
I followed your pointer and am using the en-GB version (M2 for my older CPU, I think). Like you, I find it noticeably faster in operation.
    Thanks.

You may have have already done this, but you may need to update some registry entries to get some plugins to work, see MOOX forum for details.

I haven't had to use Acrobat yet so I hadn't noticed a problem. Thanks for that additional note, Tony.
    Much appreciated.
