    Errors in new documents (2002)

One of our support staff has issues saving most new Word documents when created from the Normal blank document. After she has saved the document the first time and goes to save again, she gets a message that "This file contains repairs made by Word...." If we click on Show Repairs there is nothing to see.

We have replaced her Normal.dot with our standard Normal.dot used by all users in the company. We deleted any other Normal.dot files on her computer. The issue does not appear when she uses one of our templates to create a new document. At this time she is the only one having this issue.

Has anyone seen this and know how to cure the issue?

This may be something new in Word 2002. Normally, if you have a document with an attached template (e.g., letter.dot), when you save the document, Word checks for any changes to the attached template and asks if you want to save them. However, in previous versions of Word, this was not true for Normal.dot. Instead, users were prompted to save Normal.dot (if at all) only when exiting Word. Another way changes could be saved to Normal.dot was when the user held the Shift key and clicked the File menu to access the Save All command.

It sounds as though Word stored "AutoRecovery save" (.asd) data for Normal.dot, and that Word retrieved that information it at startup, and Word then wants to save the recovered Normal.dot. Or, Normal.dot is corrupted somehow, so the blank document is corrupted and was silently recovered, and Word is reporting that. Either way, opening Normal.dot directly and saving it should reconcile the AutoRecovery information, if it's there.

    Disclaimer: This is just a guess! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

We tried opening the Normal.dot on her computer and saving, but she still has the issue.

I'm thinking of deleted the Normal.dot completely and then opening Word 2002 to recreate the Normal. Then we will bring the styles back a few at a time to see if there is one style that is causing the issue.

Unless someone can think of another solution.

You can try the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> to see if it's a problem with normal.dot or an add-in.
    Cheers,
