Windows Back Up (Windows XP SP2)

Just managed to do first ever (for me) back up restore, following Woody's Timesaving Techniques book's method and the Wizard. It worked, but I have something I can't figure out.

In restored My Documents, where I save all OE email files, I have a number of files I can't open. Their extensions are:
- dbx (all my email folders for storing different client messages worth keeping)
- an "email addresses.WAB.WA~"

None of these have a file for opening associated with them. Any ideas on how to access them and get them into a shape where I can open them?

By the way, none of these restored folders shows up in Outlook Express (this is a new computer; the "old one died).

Make sure your previous address book file has .WAB extention (remame wa~ to wab).

Open Outlook Express, from File menu choose Import, Address book and point it to your WAB file.

To open old messages file, from File menu choose Import, Messages and follow the wizard.

Thanks for replying. I've copied your instructions and will try them and post back here with success (or lack thereof!).

(Edited by IreneLinda on 17-Nov-04 01:19. Added more info in P.S.)
Here's progress...
First, wow, you were right - I changed file names to .wab and they opened beautifully!
Second, address book import worked perfectly.
Third, one hitch: Wizard wouldn't work. It first asked me to select program and I clicked OE 6; then, "Import mail from store directory" (second button - thought the first would be importing from current folders and not the old ones); then, found directory (My Docs); then, couldn't go further - wizard said couldn't open files - "specified message store could not be opened - may be in use by OE" but they weren't, I don't think. Next error message came up said "No messages can be found in this folder or another application may be using them."

The folders I can see in My Docs are .dbx ones. Those are the ones I want, right?

Any further suggestions or have I done something wrong in the Wizard that you can tell from what I've described?

Thanks for any help or instruction you can offer!

Linda

PS One thing I just thought of that might be important: although I can see the dbx files when I open My Docs from Start menu, they do not appear in the My Docs the Wizard opens when I expand the list with the + sign.
