    Excel Pie Chart Animation (PPT-XP)

    Hello all,
When an excel pie chart is pasted into a powerpoint slide, is there a way to animate each piece of the pie?

    Thanks,
    Patrick

Unfortunately, I don't believe so - the Excel chart is viewed as a single monolithic object. You might consider recreating a similar chart in PowerPoint which would give you greater flexibility in terms of animation.

    Patrick,

It might be possible to achieve what you want but not the way you're thinking of it.

Instead of pasting the entire chart at once into powerpt, how about if you explode the pie while in powerpt. That is click a piece and drag it from the center outward. Then use a screen capture program, like Snag-it (see their web site for a trial version; it's made by TechSmith), and capture the slice while in excel. Snag-it allows you to save the captured item to the clipboard or to a file (others probably do to). Then either paste or do an Insert picture into powerpt of the slice you just captured. Repeat as necessary.

One catch: at least Snag-it does not allow you to (easily?) draw a tight boundary around the item. So you'll get a rectangular boundary around your slice. There will be some area in the captured picture that represents the background of the excel pie chart area (this is also why you should drag the slices some distance from each other so you can draw the capture rectangle around a slice without capturing anything else). If that's white and it's going onto a powerpt slide with a white background, great. Otherwise you'd have to match the background in the excel chart with the background color of the powerpt slide (not hard to do). Also, bcs of this, you won't be able to get the slices in powerpt to come together easily. Snag-it does have a trim function that might allow you to trim off a piece of the captured slice so that things go together "easier" but I've never played with this.

With each slice of the pie a separate object in powerpt, you can now animate however you want.

Thank you for the responses. I will try both suggestions.

You can do this using PPT's custom animation features.

Right-click the pie and choose Custom Animation. On the Task Pane, add an entrance effect.

Then double-click the effect you just added in the task pane and choose the Chart Animation tab. Select to animate "by category." Note that the category animation will not be available with all of the animations, so if you don't see it, go back and choose a different entrance animation.

You can also opt not to animate the grid and legend while you're on the Chart Animation tab.
