    DVD won't play (WinXP)

As my old WinXP system became sluggish, I decided to completely re-install the OS and all software. Al went fine but when I wanted to play a DVD (I have MP10 installed), I got and error (0xc00D116A).

I think that this is because I do not seem to have a DVD (MPEG2) decoder installed.... I thought DVD playing capabilities came standard with Windows.

As on my old OS this had always worked, I used my (DELL) system disks to install PowerDVD (v4.0 -- which came with my system 3 years ago). Indeed, a codec got installed but both MP and PowerDVD now exited with an error..(maybe the codec missed something...???)... anyway.. here I am ... what do I do now?

PS. I did try to reduce # colors and/or resolution... that didn't help

First, Do you have SP-2 installed + any security patches installed? Next, have you check the PowerDVD site for an update (version 4.0 may not be compatible with MP10)? Check out Troubleshooting DVD playback in Windows Media Player for Windows XP. The article is for the Media Player included with XP but should be applicable to MP10 also.

Yeah... have SP2 and all required (...) security updates.

Don't think I can update to a later PowerDVD... mine came with my DELL system... I'm sure that's an OEM version only.

I printed the MS article and will go through some of the moves later.

    Thanks,

    Erik,
You still should check the PowerDVD site. Sometimes vendors let you update OEM software. If not, they often let you upgrade for a very reasonable price.

not sure that my problem was the same as you are having now but you can read the discussion here <post#=330495>post 330495</post#> and you will see the solution for me was in fact the video card driver, the update wouldn't work direct from nvidia BUT did work by downloading from DELL....something to do with OEM perhaps. For this reason I have been reluctant to go for WMP10 to date.

    Re: DVD won't play (WinXP)

    I found this information here.

When you try to play a DVD on a computer that has been upgraded to Windows XP, you receive:

Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video. Error ID = 0xC00D116A, Remedy ID = 0x00000000.

This behavior occurs if the 3rd party DVD decoder program that is installed on your computer is NOT compatible with Windows XP.

To resolve this issue, contact your computer manufacturer, or the manufacturer of the DVD decoder program.

NOTE: see 306318 - Troubleshooting DVD Playback in Windows Media Player for Windows XP.

    Re: DVD won't play (WinXP)

I managed to fix thinks, thanks for all the help!

I found a patch to PowerDVD (4.0) on their website. I loaded that over my regular Dell OEM version (which didn't change the version number strangely enough), this fixed the error I had with PowerDVD earlier and things are now running again! (also MP now works)
