Find user whos locked worksheet (2000)

    Hi,
Is there a way to find out which user has a worksheet open which is therefore read-only due to this?
It is an annoyance when someone leaves the worksheet open on their computer and leaves it there all day.
Currently the error message displays Locked by Administrator , arghhhhhhhhhhh!

Whenever I open a network file that someone has open, the messagebox tells me who has it open (something like: "filename.xls is being modified by so-and-so, Open as Read-only, etc")

"Locked by administrator", I have never seen, but it implies a different issue: one of the administrators has the file locked.

We get this message but is usually picks the user name from the profile (from Excel, Help, About ... this software is licenced for use by ...).

The dialog shows the login name of the user who has the file open. So the file has been opened by the network Administrator. Or do you all login as Administrator?

No, we all log in as Administrator unfortunately.

I don't think there is way to get the name if you all log on with the same name.

If you all log in as "Administrator", that IS the network user name for all users. That is one of many reasons why it is not a very good idea to let everyone log in as Administrator.

Ahh, that is an annoyance! I was hoping that something like the Access coding where you can find the login name of the user when they first switch their machines on.

I don't know how your system is set up. When I turn on my PC at work, I have to login only once with my network login name and password. There is no other login name.

Re: Find user whos locked worksheet (2000)

So, if you all log in as "Administrator", that is the only login name available to Excel (and to Access too). There is no other login name it could report.

Having all users log in as network administrator seems extremely dangerous to me. Every user should have his/her individual login name and password.

So I presume that essentially 'No' it isn't possible. I totally agree with you with regards to everyone logging in as an administrator but its a worksheet that I've picked up from another persons design.

It doesn't have anything to do with the design of the workbook. It is caused by the way you all log in.
