    Text doesn't wrap (Excel 2003)

    I have a cell format set to wrap text,. The text wraps as I enter it (about 6 or 8 lines), but when I exit the cell it reverts to one line high and is filled with #####'s -- just as if I had entered too much text in a cell that was not set to wrap. If I only enter enough text for, two or three lines it wraps OK. It just seems to act up when entering a large number of lines. I have the row set to Auto Fit, but it still doesnt' work.

    Is there some limit as to the amount of wrapped text permitted in a cell?

    Filled with "###"'s implies that the format of the cell is actually a numeric format (e.g. a date).

    Numeric formats do not wrap which is a function of text only.

    You can achieve what you want by using the text function

    e.g. =text(A1,"DDDD MMM DD YYYY")

    would convert a date in cell A1 to a wrapping text line

    Generically, you can force text by concatenating a space to the tail of something - e.g. =A1 & " " if the 'general' numeric format is OK for your purposes

    Thanks Andrew,

    However the format was set to Text and everything else was what I would consider "normal" for a word wrapped Text cell. It still didn't work.
    I'll give your "=text()" a try.

    Could you attach an example file with this problem?

    The problem is the "TEXT" format. The problem goes away if you set it to "general"

    The TEXT format allows only 255 chars or you get an "overflow" (the ####s) like a number that won't fit in the width. This is "text" that won't fit. This cell has 385 chars.

    Thanks Steve -- I was wondering if there was some limit, and there is.
