    Mysterious Beeps

I'm working on a Gateway computer w/AMD 700MHz, processor. On bootup it emits a series of 12 short beeps. Any idea as to what causes this? The computer seems to be running quite normally otherwise.

    Re: Mysterious Beeps

These "beep codes" come from the BIOS, and you need to look up the specific beep codes for your BIOS. Most of these can be found at BIOS Central Look for the panel on the right hand side headed beep codes.

If you have an AST BIOS then 12 short beeps means "The real time clock/CMOS IC failed. Replace the CMOS or motherboard"
On a Mylex BIOS it means "The CMOS RAM has failed"
None of the others seems to have 12 short beeps as a vaild code.

    Hi Stuart,

Actually, it's not my machine but a lady's that I'm trying to help. It's a 4 (going on 5) year old Gateway product. Could it be that the clock battery has or is failing?

I guess it's possible - but in any case this is definitely a hardware problem, so I'm going to move the thread to the hardware board.

    Re: Mysterious Beeps

It looks like it is an AMI bios (which supposedly only goes to 11 beeps, but I distinctly count 12). Anyway, Gateway informs me that this indicates a problem with cache memory and that having detected the problem it disabled the cache. The computer seems to continue booting up OK and I've detected no particular slow down, so I suppose one just lives with it. I still think I'll check out the cmos battery just in case.

If there's a problem with the cache memory, the computer could die at any moment, make sure your lady friend backs up all work immediately.

    Re: Mysterious Beeps

According to the techies at Gateway, once this error has occured the BIOS automatically disables cache memory. So I'm assuming there will not be any problems.
