Unable to log into server (ver6)

I received an error message that there is a problem logging into the mail server (postoffice.pacbell.net) and it relates to an invalid userid/password. I know that both userid and password are correct for the mail account. Everything worked just fine last week. There was no install of any software.

    Any ideas as to why?

    Thanks,
    John

What is the full error message that was posted?

Most of the time, it is a server issue more than a Outlook Express issue. Is it still acting up, if so have you checked with your ISP?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Sometimes this account information, stored in the registry, becomes corrupted and the only solution is to re-create it. The trick is to avoid losing your identity in the process. In Outlook, you can set up multiple accounts for the same profile, simply by adding another one. I believe Outlook Express is similar, using Tools>Accounts....

Try this: open the Accounts dialog, highlight your existing (nonfunctional) account, click properties, and add BROKEN to the end of the name in the top box of the dialog. Click OK. Then use Add>Mail... to create a new account with the identical settings (except for that BROKEN part). If the new one works, you can delete the old one. If not, more serious surgery might be required.

Well Doc your resolution worked. The patient survived.

Re: Unable to log into server (ver6)

I had a problem similar to the one described in this thread. Sometimes I could not send e-mail. Sometimes I could not download e-mail. Apparently something was corrupted in the popuidl.dbx file. Deleting this file would allow one download. The file would then be restored and the same problems came back.
I followed the advice in Message 428543 and my problems appear to be solved. Things have been working as they should for three days now.
My sincere thanks to you jscher2000 for the assistance and advice.

Re: Unable to log into server (ver6)

Apparently a problem continues to exist. After things had been working satisfactorily for about a week, I again went into Tools, Accounts, and then Removed the Broken file. The other identical file was properly designated as Default and continued to be designated as Default after the Removal. But after Removing the Broken file things no longer worked. I could not send and receive e-mail.
So, I followed the procedure prescribed again, created a new identical account and designated the old account as Broken.
Again the new identical account was designated as Default. And lo and behold everything worked again.
Now I am afraid to delete the old file now designated as Broken for fear things will go belly up again. It is not too bad to leave the two accounts in place but there must be an underlying problem that is not evident.
Where should I look for the source of the problem? Am I just cruising blindly into a storm that will come up to bite me at the most inopportune time.?
Your counsel and guidance is sought.
    Sincerely,
    Slim

Re: Unable to log into server (ver6)

I have to admit that I am an Outlook user mostly, and have only used Outlook Express for a few little things here and there. So... not speaking from experience, but from the perspective of "it's it ain't broke, don't fix it," I'd leave it as it is for the moment. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
