    Win2K Boot Floppy

In the Win2K "Backup" program there'a a menu choice to make a recovery disk. It doesn't work. Seems it's missing files, like ntldr and ntdetect.com. Anyway, after messing around with it, I got it to work... but it "just" starts up the Win2K install on the hard drive. I suppose it's acting as a substitute boot sector or something.

Is there a way to make an NTFS boot disk that just drops to an a: prompt? So that it doesn't load Win2K, but rather just starts up into the NTFS environ?

The nearest thing to a "boot floppy" that you can achieve with Windows 2000 is to install Recovery Console (or boot from an Installation CD and choose Recover from the menu). This gives you a limited command line interface.

    Re: Win2K Boot Floppy

    Stuart:

If Irun into a problem, which I seem to have a propensity for, then I need my Win2K CD, my AntiVirus boot CD, my system utilities CD, ....

Isn't there a way to create a bootable CD to which I could then add all this other stuff, so that everything is "in one place?"

I was able to construct (hooray for slow me) a bootable CD last nite, but via Win98 / DOS boot. I (obviously) would need the same in Win2K. I thought maybe I could construct a Win2K bootable CD, and then add RC to that.

But when I looked again at the RC install process, it would seem that it won't install except on a fully installed system, hence not on a bootable CD.

Is this actually NOT do-able? Norton used to have a thing for Win98 where you could construct a boot CD from which Win98 could actually run. From that, you could then ad files etc....

    Joe:

Woulda been great, but it doesn't work with 2K...

It's rather confusing, 'cause it seems to say it does, but then during set up, no way...

    But thanks for the research...

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Chuck,
You can build a BartPE CD on a Win2k system but not for booting a Win2k system only XP or 2k3. You need to look at BootCD section of the site to see if Corporate Modboot will work for you.

Have you had a look at the BootDisk website? Don't know if you'd find what you want there...

    John:

Seems like there's a couple of good start files there... I'll try them for set ups over the next couple days, and let you know.

    Thanks.
